Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

9:00 a.m. – 3 p.m.   Welcome Tent and Dragon Move-In Crew (in front of Snarr Hall)

It’s a great day to be a Dragon! Today is the day, if you are living in the residence halls, to move in and get situated. The Dragon Move-In Crew will be outside around the residence halls waiting to help you move into your room.  Feel free to stop people at the Welcome Tent and Orientation Check-In to get your last minute questions answered.

1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.   Dragon Day – Comstock Memorial Union

If you have not attended a Dragon Day now is the time!  Come to the Comstock Memorial Union to get registered for classes and meet with peer advisors who can assist you.

4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.   Orientation Kick Off – Holmquist Hall Slab

It’s time to rush to the SLAB because Orientation is officially about to start! Find your Student Orientation Counselor (SOC) on the Slab, the space between Holmquist and Grantham/Nelson, who will be holding up and hollering your group number. This will be the beginning of your college career – a time for you to meet hundreds of new people!

5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.   Faculty and First year Student Dinner – Kise Hall

After a long morning of unloading and moving in, enjoy a relaxing dinner in Kise Commons, our newly remodeled cafeteria. This typical Kise meal will include several entrees, great desserts and a variety of soft drinks. So come try out all they have to offer at Kise Commons, catered by Sodexho Services.

7:00 pm-8:00 pm    "Welcome to Your New Community" Residence Hall Activities

Settle into your floor community and get to know your Resident Assistant (RA) and neighbors! Enjoy some get to know you activities as you get familiar with your new community and ways to get involved!

8:00 pm – 10:00 pm Class of 2013 social on the Campus Mall – Campus Mall

No need to sit in your room all alone wondering how you’ll make those college friends! This is the time to come hang out and meet people. Plus, there’s free food and some great inflatable games sponsored by the Dragon Entertainment Group.

10:00 p.m.  Rob O’Reilly – Center for the Arts Hansen Theater

With appearances on Comedy Central’s Live at Gotham, NBC’s American’s Got Talent, and on the Tonight Show as Jay Leno’s correspondent, 24 year old Rob O’Reilly is quickly gaining a reputation as an up-and-coming comedian to watch in New York City. Come laugh with this Boston College scholarship recipient and graduate.  You don’t want to miss out on this incredible experience!

9:15 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.   University Convocation (mandatory) – Center for the Arts Hansen Theatre 

All Incoming students are expected to attend this kickoff event for the incoming class of 2009. Convocation is a ceremony to celebrate the official beginning of your college experience. By attending you will have the opportunity to win $100 gift certificate to the MSUM Bookstore.

10:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.   Undeclared and Department Meeting with 1st year students

After the University Welcome Convocation, follow a SOC to your new academic department. Each academic department will host a social so you can meet and get to know your professors and other students in your college. This provides a great opportunity to a feel for your major, what to expect for the next four years, and meet some people who share the same interests as you. If you are undeclared, that is A-Okay we have a place for you!

11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.   Blazing BBQ - Campus Mall

It’s time for the famous Blazing BBQ. Full of summer foods: burgers, brats, fruit, chips, soda, etc, this mighty feast is hard to miss.  It’s free, it’s delicious, it’s amazing!

1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Hot Topics Sessions – Comstock Memorial Union

Come learn what being a Dragon is all about!  This is time to form relationships among your fellow classmates, and the faculty and professional staff members.  With helpful information on the necessary tools and skills for success at MSUM, such as our Learning Community programs, sports and intramural programs, personal finance, personal safety, getting involved with campus, making healthy eating choices in Kise Dining Hall, studying abroad, the Dragon Core and much more!

3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. D2L & HLTH 122 Orientation and overview (mandatory) – Center for the Arts

Come learn what being a Dragon is all about!  This is time to form relationships among your fellow classmates, and the faculty and professional staff members.  With helpful information on the necessary tools and skills for success at MSUM, such as our Learning Community programs, sports and intramural programs, personal finance, personal safety, getting involved with campus, making healthy eating choices in Kise Dining Hall, studying abroad, the Dragon Core and much more!

5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Dinner in Kise Hall

Enjoy dinner in Kise with some new friends! You will need the energy for a great night of dancing under the starts.

7:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.  Hawaiian Dance – Holmquist SLAB

Wear your crazy Hawaiian outfits and hula down to the Campus mall to dance with the graduating class of 2013 under the starts!

11:00 p.m. – 1:00 a.m. Tournament Thursday – Nemzek

If you thought the night was over, think again! After the Hawaiian Dance, gather in Nemzek Hall for your college Pep Rally! Meet our talented athletes with MSUM’s own Athletic Director, Doug Peters. Stick around for free food, great prizes, ridiculous games, and more. Whether you are interested in Intramural sports, club teams like lacrosse, or just want to earn the right to be called MSUM’s #1 Fan, now is the time and Nemzek is the place to learn how to get involved in Dragon Athletics.  You don’t want to miss this!

You have made a great choice for your education by joining a Learning Community. Meet faculty, get to know your Dragon Mentor, and fellow classmates as you get information on what this journey will be about and how you’ll all do better at it as you move together through your first academic year.  Oh, and eat a darn good breakfast too!

                (Sessions at 10:00, 10:45 & 11:30 a.m./split by SOC group)

Ease your mind for Monday’s assignments by having a hands on opportunity to explore D2L and getting your questions answered.

1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Wellness Center Activities - Wellness Center

Come check out what the Wellness Center has to offer in your quest for a healthy mind and body! A fabulous free surprise gift will be given at the door, along with a facility tours, equipment tutorials, a chance to try a variety of fitness classes, Reflexology, free massages, and more.

3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. The need-to-know of residence hall living – Weld Hall Auditorium

Save some money, time, and energy by learning the ins and outs of living on campus from your area director. Your all hall meeting will give you the information you need to know to be successful in your residence hall experience.

6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Non traditional student, transfer & off campus social – Comstock Memorial Union 227

Feel like you are out of the loop living off of campus? Well come to the social and meet others that are in the same boat. Here you can chill together, have some chow and get acquainted with students who are new to campus.

7:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Navigating the Minefield of the 1st Year of College: Andrea Mosby Jones– Center for the Arts Hansen Theatre

Everyone comes to college to succeed! Unfortunately, we’re not all just hard wired to know how. Come learn about how to be the best student you can be and gain some insight about the road ahead.

9:00 p.m. – 12:00 a.m. Dragons After Dark - Comstock Memorial Union

Can you dig it? Come see how the ancient Egyptians dug it up! Put on some eyeliner, grab your mummy, and walk like an Egyptian over to the Comstock Memorial Union (CMU) for a chance to win over $1,800 in prizes!  Enjoy food and games fit for a pharaoh. Grand Prize - an Ipod Touch! Now how’s your mummy?

Sponsored by Campus Crusade for Christ, You don’t want to miss a day of diving, spiking, and setting with all your new buddies! Want to be in it?? Talk to your SOC about setting up a team or joining one!

2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Green Fee Concert – Holmquist SLAB

Come jam out between volleyball games and listen to music under the sun. Between sets there will be games and an opportunity to win prizes. Come soak up some rays, relax, and enjoy your Saturday afternoon on the SLAB.

7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Campus Capers – Center for the Arts Hansen Theatre

Lights, camera, ACTION! Hustle over to Hansen Theatre for MSUM’s own version of Saturday Night Live. You will be on the edge of your seat laughing, crying, and tinkling your pants as the SOCs perform a variety of skits and offer their words of wisdom.

10:00 p.m. – 1:00 a.m. Open Mic and Mocktails Night - Comstock Memorial Union

Grab one of our delicious mocktails and enjoy listening to your fellow classmates tear up the stage all night long! Be brave – our co-sponsor, Dragon Entertainment Group, will be there with your Student Orientation Counselor to cheer you on.

Meet some of MSUM’s multicultural students and enjoy a delicious lunch. Also, find out how you can get involved in the great multicultural organizations on campus.

2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Safe Zone LGBTQ Social – Women’s Center

Join members and supporters of Safe Zone, the Women’s Center, LGBTQ students, faculty, and staff for a social in the Women’s Center - 154 Bridges Hall. Meet other LGBTQ folks and allies on campus and learn about additional resources and organizations on campus and within the Fargo/Moorhead community.

3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Sorority Tea – Comstock Memorial Union 101

Go Greek! Learn about what the different sororities on campus have to offer you. This is a chance for you to mingle with current and future student members.

7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Residence Hall Floor Meeting- Must Attend

Head back to the residence halls and take this opportunity to meet your new family for the next year. This will give you a chance to learn all the policies, expectations, and procedures for living in your hall. You will be held accountable for these rules while living on campus! This is also a great opportunity to relax and mingle with your floor-mates.
