Why Should I attend Orientation?
At Orientation, you will receive a comprehensive explanation of everything you must do to make your undergraduate experience complete. You will have opportunities to talk with academic advisors, faculty advisors, and peer advisors. Where else will you be able to get your student ID, find out about Financial Aid, discover opportunities for student involvement, go on a campus tour, and much more all in one step?
How and when do I sign up for orientation?
Orientation is FREE!!! It starts August 17th, and we have 4 days of events filled JUST FOR YOU! MSUM is awaiting your arrival!
Who is this "SOC" person I got a letter from?
A SOC (Student Orientation Counselor) is an upperclassmen assigned to you to help make your transition to college easier. They will be available at the beginning of your day to answer any questions, calm your worries, and make sure you feel comfortable as you make MSUM your new home!
Do I have to attend Orientation? No, Orientation is not mandatory, but strongly suggested. Attending Orientation allows new students an opportunity to familiarize themselves with campus and the resources available before the school year begins. Orientation is free and filled with fun and crazy events!
I haven't received any information about Orientation yet, what should I do?
Orientation packets will be sent out over the course of a few days. If you haven't gotten yours, it's probably on the way!
Are parents allowed at Orientation?Orientation is designed for new students to learn about MSUM and the programs and services offered to support student academic success. It is a time to meet new friends and make connections in our Dragon community. There are no parent activities offered during orientation. However, during each Dragon Registration Day in April, June, or July, a Family Orientation program is offered and we highly recommend families attend that program to become familiar with the services such as Housing and Residential Life, Financial Aid, billing, health and wellness services, etc.
What should I have done before Orientation?
For a less stressful transition, we recommend you have most, if not all, of your paperwork done before arriving to campus. This means applying for Financial Aid (see below) and/or squaring away your payment with the Business Office for the upcoming semester. We also encourage you to reserve your books online. To do so, visit their website or purchase them in the bookstore prior to the week before classes. The bookstore is busy during this time, and it can save you money, time, trouble, and headache if you get them early. If you plan to park on campus, the Parking Office asks that you reserve your permit online at least 24 hours before pick up. To do so, visit their website.
How do I apply for Financial Aid?
We'd suggest you look at the MSUM Financial Aid Office website or call their office at 218.477.2251. They are located in Owens Hall 107.
What do I do about my books?
The campus bookstore is located in MacLean Hall 176. They are open from 8 am-4:30 pm to answer any questions you may have. If you'd like to know more about the bookstore or the services it provides, please visit their website.
I have some paper work stuff that I didn't get done. Who do I talk to?
Questions about records, paying your tuition, financial aid disbursement, and other university policies and procedures should be directed to the Business Office. They are located in Owens Hall 106. Visit their website or call them at 218.477.2221.
