INTERNATIONAL STUDENT POLICY: SCHOOL OF NURSING AND HEALTHCARE LEADERHIP
The Homeland Security Act of 2002 fundamentally changed the requirements for the international students who wish to study in the United States. The major change that affects an online program is that no more than the equivalent of one on-line/distance education class or 3 credits per session may count towards the ‘full course of study’ requirement. A full copy of the NAFSA (Association of International Educators) Advisory Manual is available International Student Affairs office [Chapter 3: F-1 Students; Section 3.20.7; Authority cite 8 C.F.R. SS 214.2(f) (6) (i) (G)].
- Baccalaureate of Nursing Science
- Policy: Students must comply with the US Government requirement regarding the number of online credits they take.
- Nursing faculty action to accommodate the requirement in Semester 7 of the nursing curriculum: Faculty teaching N420 and N430 will include face to face scheduled meetings to comply with the Homeland Security requirements. Those meetings will be documented in the student’s file.
Post Admission Requirements
After admission to the nursing program, this documentation must be supplied directly to the nursing department. The nursing department cannot access health records submitted to the student health center.
1. Annual criminal background check
2. Annual Tuberculin test clearance (negative Mantoux, PPD, or chest xray)
3. Current CPR Certification (AHA Healthcare Provider level or American Red Cross Professional Level )
4. Current Immunizations: Hepatitis B, Tetanus
5. Nursing Assistant Course completed before the program begins in the fall. Click on CNA button at left for information on where to obtain the nursing assistant course.
Application Procedure
Two separate application processes must be completed:
FIRST: Apply to MSUM online or contact the Admissions Office (800-593-7246 or locally at 218-477-2161) and have a MSUM application mailed directly to you. Complete the application and mail the MSUM application to the Admissions Office. Select transfer student status if you are transferring from a different college into MSUM, select new student if this is your first post secondary application. Remember to request two (2) official transcripts -- one to be sent to MSUM records office and one to be sent to the MSUM nursing department. This will ensure that consideration of your nursing application will not be delayed while awaiting transcripts.
SECOND: After you are accepted into MSUM, you will apply to the BSN nursing porgram. The BSN nursing application is online and you will need the free download Adobe Reader. Type the information on the form print, sign it and mail to the Nursing Department.
Submit the nursing application and two MSUM professional reference forms (from either a supervisor, nursing colleague or nursing instructor) to:

BSN Curriculum (120 credits)
The nursing curriculum consists of nursing courses, co-requisite courses, and Dragon Core (general education) courses taken together throughout all eight semesters. There are two or more nursing courses, including a laboratory or clinical course, in every semester.
Although the program is completed in three years of eight consecutive semesters, this is not considered an accelerated program. The nursing courses are taken in sequence, so transfer students who may have several general education or other required supporting courses completed will still require eight semesters for completion of the nursing courses.
