MSUM Nursing Scholarships

Nurse Faculty Loan Program

What is it?
The Minnesota State University Moorhead applies each year for a federal Health and Human Services grant to administer a Nurse Faculty Loan Program for Master of Science nurse educator students. Up to 85% of the loan can be forgiven if the graduate teaches full-time in a school of nursing for four years. The 15% remainder is repaid at a 3% interest rate.

Who is eligible?
Any full-time nurse educator student. Full-time is defined as at least 8 graduate nursing credits for a minimum of two semesters in an academic year.

  1. US citizen
  2. Not in default on any other federal student loan.
  3. Good academic standing (at least 3.0 GPA)

What does it cover?

  1. Tuition
  2. Fees
  3. Books
  4. Computer, if needed.
  5. Laboratory expenses.

It does not include stipend support and cannot be used for living expenses, student transportation cost, room/board, or personal expenses.

How much can I get?
The amount available for loan each year depends on the amount received from the federal government. Loans will be awarded to applicants on a first come, first served basis until the loan amount is expended. This loan is not need-based and can be renewed for up to 5 years.

In addition to loan application forms, a Free Application for Federal Student Aif (FAFSA) must be completed.

Tri-County Hospital Foundation has a $1,000 annual scholarship available for advanced or graduate level nursing students.

Eligibility Criteria are the following:

  • Has been accepted in an advanced or graduate level health care program with career goals in the health care field
  • Currently is or has been a resident in the service area of Tri-County Hospital, Wadena, MN, or has an immediate family member who resides in the TCH service area.
  • Potential to return to the service area and/or within the Tri-County Hospital system.
  • Has demonstrated leadership ability, initiative, and active participation in work, volunteerism, and/or community activity.
  • Has a G.P.A. of at least a 2.5 on a 4.0 scale or the equivalent, or meet the minimum G.P.A. requirements established for the college or university's academia if it is higher.
  • Submits the required application materials on or before the deadline date of August 1.

Yale School of Nursing

Pre and Postdoctoral Research Training Program in Self and Family Management. The purpose of this pre- and postdoctoral training program is to prepare nurse researchers to contribute to the science of self and family management chronic illness, especially cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes or risk for the development of these conditions. Pre- and postdoctoral trainees will work with faculty from Yale School of Nursing and across Yale University who are making significant contributions to self and family management research. The program focuses on the development of knowledge and the understanding of self and family management, development of interventions, and the testing of these interventions.

Doctoral & PostDoctoral Fellowships

Interventions to Prevent or Manage Chronic Illness. Developing scholars for nursing practice. School of Nurisng The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Fellows will conduct a research study, take course work in nursing and related fields with a focus on intervention design, and conceptualization and outcomes measurement. They will also participate in interdisciplinary research in one of the interdisciplinary research centers at the University. MNAF $2000 scholarship

Qualifications:

  1. Economic need.
  2. Accepted to or enrolled in a baccalaureate program in nursing in Minnesota.
  3. Minnesota Nurses Association (MNA) or Minnesota Student Nurses Association (MSNA) member.

Federal Traineeship Grant Award CURRENTLY CLOSED  Stay tuned for 2009-2010

Each year the MSUM graduate nursing program applies for and receives The Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) grant for advanced nursing education. The amount of the grant varies each year according to federal budget appropriations and number of graduate schools who apply for the awards
The grant award is for student stipends that may be used for education expenses including tuition and fees, required textbooks (up to $500) and other educational expenses that are part of the graduate nursing program. Monies may not be used for books for library or personal/professional use, travel expenses, or attendance at professional meetings. This grant award is divided equally among graduate nursing students who meet the following requirements and submit a completed application by the deadline. Eligibility requirements:

  • Completed your first year of the graduate nursing program
  • Enrolled full-time or part-time during your final year of study

American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) awards $1,500 per academic year to students who complete baccalaureate or graduate degree programs in nursing. April 1 is the deadline to apply for these Educational Advancement Scholarships.

American Indian Graduate Center (AIGC) announces the availability of graduate fellowships for American Indian and Alaska Native students from federally recognized U.S. tribes.

American Assembly for Men in Nursing Foundationand Johnson & Johnson's Campaign for Nursing's Future are offering a new $1,000 scholarship program for male students pursuing professional nursing education programs.

Betty Irene Moore Predoctoral Fellowships of $60,000 per fellow per year are available to prepare nursing faculty for positions in colleges and universities in the Greater San Francisco Bay Area.

Disadvantaged Faculty Loan Repayment Program (FLRP) provides for repayment of education loans for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds who agree to serve for at least two years as faculty members at eligible health professions and nursing schools.

ExceptionalNurse.com awards a $500 Anna May Rolando scholarship to a qualified student with a disability. Preference is given to graduate students.

Hispanic Association of Colleges & Universities offers scholarships for graduate and undergraduate students attending a HACU Member or Partner college or university.

Indian Health Service (IHS) administers a program to help repay undergraduate and graduate loans of health professionals in return for full-time clinical service in Indian health programs.

March of Dimes awards scholarships to registered nurses enrolled in graduate programs of maternal-child nursing.

Maryland State Nursing Scholarship is available to Maryland residents seeking an undergraduate or graduate degree in nursing.

National Alaska Native American Indian Nurses Association (NANAINA) awards 10 student members enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate nursing program with $500 Merit Awards annually.

National Association of Hispanic Nurses (NAHN) awards $2,000 annually to students earning a master's degree in a maternal-child nursing program and $1,000 to student members enrolled in any level nursing program.

National Association of Neonatal Nurses (NANN) offers scholarships for members pursuing a BSN or graduate degree in neonatal nursing or nursing administration.

National Black Nurses Association (NBNA) offers a Student Nurse of the Year award to an NBNA member in pursuit of a baccalaureate or other advanced nursing degree.

National Health Service Corps, a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, has information about scholarships and loan repayment programs for health care professionals who practice in a medically underserved area.

Nurse Loan Repayment and Scholarship Program (NELRP) offers registered nurses substantial assistance to repay educational loans in exchange for service in critical shortage facilities. This program is administered by the the Division of Nursing at HRSA.

Nurses' Educational Funds, Inc. offers a scholarship for nurses enrolled in an accredited master's or doctoral level nursing program.

Promise of Nursing Regional Faculty Fellowship awards $1,000 to $7,500 to students committed to the nurse educator role. This scholarship is offered through The Foundation of the National Student Nurses' Association.

The Oncology Nursing Society Foundation awards academic scholarships specifically for students pursuing a master's or doctoral degree or a post-master's certificate.
