Robert
W. Olson, baritone, studied with many teachers and
coaches in the U.S. and Europe; among them, Eugene
Conley, Diran Akmajian, Ferdinand Grossman, Bruce Foote,
James Bailey, Oren Brown, and Paul Ulanowsky. He
received his Bachelor of Music (1955) and Master of
Music (1957) degrees in Vocal Performance at the
University of Arizona - Tucson. Olson was accepted
into the opera school of the Vienna Academy, received
his DMA in Vocal Performance from the University of
Illinois (1972), and has had several post-doctoral study
grants (University of Virginia, Princeton University).
He sang leading roles with the Omaha Civic Opera, the
Akadamie Theater (Vienna), and the Skylight Opera of
Milwaukee. He also performed with Central City Opera and
Fargo-Moorhead Opera. He has done numerous orchestra and
oratorio performances in the U.S., Austria, and Norway.
He taught for 27 years at NDSU and has done many
workshops and master classes. Olson started teaching at
MSUM in 1996. He has been active in the field of vocal
health and voice rehabilitation and was a partner of the
Voice Institute for seven years.
