Dr. Tom Strait
 

Dr. Tom Strait is currently in his eighth year on the faculty at MSUM. In addition to serving as Chair of the Music Department, he teaches trumpet and horn. He holds a Doctor of Arts degree in trumpet performance from the University of Northern Colorado, as well as degrees from the University of Texas and Henderson State University. Before coming to MSUM, he taught for several years at both the university and public school levels and served in the U.S. Air Force, playing with the USAF Academy Falconaires. An active free lance trumpet player, he has performed with many artists, including Bob Hope, Robert Goulet, Nancy Wilson, and Doc Severinsen. His past teachers include William Pfund, Raymond Crisara, and Donald Kramer. Dr. Strait is a Yamaha performing artist.

High Brass Studies

 

Trumpet lessons are available to all students enrolled at the university. Students may register for up to three credits of applied lessons per semester. One credit of applied lessons is equivalent to one 1/2 hour lesson per week, two credits is equivalent to a 1 hour lesson per week, and three credits is equivalent to 1 1/2 hours of lesson per week.

 

All trumpet students follow a standard curriculum for trumpet based upon a standard four-year sequence. Trumpet instruction for each student is based upon the level and ability of each student. All students are expected to perform standard literature including solos and etudes.
