Graduate Handbook for Music Students
at Minnesota State University Moorhead

INTRODUCTION

The Graduate Handbook for Music Students is intended to supplement the University Graduate Bulletin with information specific to music studies. The music department at Minnesota State University Moorhead offers two Masters programs--a Master of Science in Music Education and a Master of Arts in Music. Each of these programs has two tracks, one which results in the writing of a Master's thesis and requires a total of 30 credits for graduation, the second track does not require a thesis but has a graduate project for culmination. The project may include a recital or a lecture-recital, however, all programs require a written document. This second track requires 32 credits. For specific program designs, please refer to the curriculum worksheets.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

The music department requires an undergraduate G.P.A. of 3.00 for admission to the graduate programs. The University allows students with a 2.75 to enter and music department's policy is to accept these students on a provisional basis. Deficiencies are to be noted on the departmental recommendation and specific courses should be recommended for remedial work.

ADVISOR

When the department's Graduate Committee reviews the student's file for admission, a faculty advisor is assigned. The advisor will assist in developing the course fo study (Plan, Form 1) and the establishing of the student's Examining Committee (Form 2).

ENTRANCE EXAMS

The music department administers three entrance exams for diagnostic purposes. The music history exam is administered during enrollment in the music research course, the music theory exam is given at the beginning of Music 674, Directed Study in Music Theory, and a performance audition is required. The audition will take place at the beginning of the first semester of enrollment and will serve to identify the performance level for enrollment.

APPLIED STUDY

Applied study is required for all graduate music students. Admission to the 500 level in applied study will be done through jury exam or may be assigned at the initial audition if the appropriate faculty members agree.

All graduate students are expected to participate in an ensemble during the semesters they are in residence. Each of the graduate programs has an ensemble requirement.

RECITALS

Both Master of Science and Master of Arts students may give recitals as part of their Master's project. In the event that a recital is part of the graduate program, the graduate student must earn a minimum of 3 credits at the 600 level.

In order to qualify for a public recital, a screening jury will be held a minimum of one month prior to the recital date.

ASSISTANTSHIPS

The music department offers assistantships each year in vocal, instrument and music education. The awards range from $2,000 to $3,000, depending on several factors: advancement in the program, hours of commitment and specific assigned duties. Application for an assistantship should be made as early as possible, preferably when the Application for Admission is submitted. Financial documents must be promptly provided to the Financial Aid Office. Additional information can be obtained from the Graduate Bulletin.
