Music Education at MSUM

Minnesota State University Moorhead offers the Bachelor of Science in Music Education in preparation for teacher certification and a career as a music education specialist. Students choose a vocal-choral and/or an instrumental emphasis. Studies include preparation in a variety of music education approaches, including those of Zoltan Kodály. There are excellent opportunities to observe and to teach with the many fine music education specialists in the elementary and secondary schools in the Fargo-Moorhead area. In addition, there are student chapters of the Music Educators National Conference (MENC) and the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA). The Northern Plains Kodály Chapter and the national headquarters of the Organization of American Kodály Educators (OAKE) are based in Fargo.

As part of their teacher preparation, students perform in the numerous choral and instrumental ensembles on campus. Music education workshops and service activities are available in the area as well.

Advanced study is possible in preparation for the Master of Science in Music Education. This degree is directed to recent graduates and to music educators with teaching experience. MSUM also hosts an innovative Kodály Certification program during summer sessions for graduate students.
