Anthropology 216: The Paleolithic Age

Fall, 2001

Special Assignment: 50 pts.

Due: December 7, 2001

Minnesota State University Moorhead recruits high school students as part of its normal annual activity.  As part of a new program to entice students to come to MSU, the university is giving the visiting high-schoolers an opportunity to see university students apply their knowledge to complex problem solving.  As an archaeology student you are given a group of 10 high school students.  You are paid $25.00 for each student you can get to write a positive review of what you explained to them.

Your job is to show these young students how someone trained in a university can confront chaotic information and begin reducing it to pattern and meaning.

There are two cases to consider, shown on the accompanying page.  Each represents an archaeological level, or floor, at a Paleolithic cave site.  You are to explain to your group of students what these levels or components, mean, and how you are able to understand their meaning.  There are, then, several questions you must answer.

1.       How would you describe the differences between these two levels at the site?

2.     What do these differences reflect about the behavior of the people who lived at this site?

3.     Why did you decide to focus on these particular issues?

Please remember that your audience is a group of high school students.  They chose you because they are thinking about studying archaeology.  Write your answer for them.  You must be clear, and you must also impress them with your knowledge.  When you are through explaining this to them, they should go home wishing that someday they could be as smart as you are.

LeTours Cave: Levels 4 and 7

Your answer should be typed, double spaced, and 3-5 pages long (or as long as you need to answer the questions satisfactorily).
