Texts: No books are required. Readings as assigned (see below). Students must have access to the internet for the class readings. All of the assigned readings may be accessed from campus computer labs and are free of charge.
Course Description: This course is an overview of the culture history of the native peoples of the northern Plains and Midwest. It combines the fields of ethnography and archaeology. This course is intended to provide students with an appreciation of regional Native American culture history from the perspective of archaeology and ethnohistory, to give students an opportunity to think anthropologically, and to assist in developing the ability to think critically about historical issues.
Course Topics · Introduction, evidence used--archaeological and ethnohistorical · Geography and peoples · Cultures at Contact; impact of Europeans. · The mythic past. Moundbuilders and Vikings. · Early Cultures: the Paleoindian and Archaic periods · The Woodland; Hopewell influences, and the "container revolution." · Late Woodland dynamics; wild rice, deep water fishing, and gardening. · The village life-way. · The great, late cultures: Oneota, Middle Missouri, Mississippian · Overview/Review.
Assignments: Students are required to complete assignments based on readings. There will be no more than three during the semester. These short writing assignments will be about 10pts each.
Exam Schedule:
- Exam #1: Jan. 19 (map quiz) (15-20pts)
- Exam #2: Feb. 7 (~40pts)
- Exam #3: March 7 (~40pts)
- Final Exam: May 4 (9am) (~70pts)
Student Assessment:
Final grades will be assigned as simple letter grades (A, B, C, D, F), and will be based on the total accumulated points from assignments. Tests will consist of objective and essay questions. There is no type of extra credit available.
