Welcome and Introductions:
§
Everyone present introduced themselves.
·
Anita Bender will be taking minutes and providing
clerical support for the TOCAR Collaborative as part of the new
Bremer grant.
·
The meetings will be rotated between the different
institutions in alphabetical order. Concordia has started out the
new year by hosting this meeting. MSCTC will host the next meeting
on October 14.
Meeting dates for
the academic year: The Collaborative meetings will be the second
Tues. of the month. The following is a list of the meeting dates
for the rest of the academic year: 10/14, 11/11, 12/9, 1/13, 2/10,
3/9, 4/13, and 5/11.
II.
Request for Speaker at Riverland Community College:
Celeste Ruble from Riverland Community College in Austin, MN, is
asking for support from the Collaborative. They have received a
Bremer grant through MNSCU to do anti-racism work on their campus.
They will be having a faculty/staff in-service on Sept. 26th
and have asked for someone from the TOCAR Collaborative to come and
speak, give a “pep talk," to their staff and faculty about the
Collaborative work. They are making time, 1 hour to 1 ˝ hours at
the beginning of Friday the 26th at 9:00 am. They will
pay for hotel the night before and all travel expenses.
Johnathan Judd and Christina Ingram agreed to give the talk on
behalf of the Collaborative. The website has a lot of info. and Amy
is willing to help them prepare for the talk. Amy will email
Johnathan and Christina to set up a time to meet and get materials.
III.
Choosing TOCAR Collaborative Logo:.
·
Two logos were discussed with one chosen but with the
following suggestions: Rotate the inside text; "Training" should
start where “our campuses” starts. Ask the artist to brighten the
colors up.
·
Phyllis will talk to the artist and ask her to make
those changes. The Logo with the changes will be brought back to
the Collaborative before anything is printed with the Logo.
IV.
Collaborative Grants Update and Planning:
A. First Grant
Final Report
The first year
report from the first Bremer grant is on the TOCAR website. A final
report will be submitted soon to Bremer so Phyllis will be
writing to each institutional member of the Collaborative to get
information. The following list is an example of the kind of
information that will be asked for from each of the Collaborative
Team members:
·
Where is your campus or organization in the
initiative's developmental process?
·
How did you spend the $3,500? How it benefited your
team?
·
A discussion of how administering the institutional
survey went. (We won’t have the results for the final report but we
can talk about the process.)
Some of the Collaborative Team members
have not used the $3,500 so Phyllis will follow up with each
institution.
B. Institutional
Assessment Committee
The committee for
creating the Institutional surveys is Kay Schneider, Deb White, Amy
Phillips, Phyllis May-Machunda, Ted Guerrero, Rick Chapman, and
Jennifer Kueger. The group discussed the institutional survey,
which will be completed, on each of the campuses this fall. Phyllis
reiterated to the group that survey data is to be used by the teams
at each of the institutions for the development of the team and
putting together an anti-racism plan.
C. Second Bremer
Grant
The Collaborative
has received a Bremer grant for another two years. This grant
provides funding for:
i.
Administrative support on each of the campuses.
ii.
More Level I trainings – This is an introductory
daylong training which provides the analysis and framework that the
TOCAR initiative is based on. It is a good opportunity to have
community folks trained who can serve on your teams. MCARI offered
the following dates to do Level I trainings here for the five
institutions: Oct. 1, 2, 8, and 29 and Nov. 20, 21, and 22.
Concordia asked for October 8th and NDSU asked for
November 20th. Shelly will ask the YWCA if they would
like to have one of those dates to do this training. Phyllis and
Amy will follow up with MSCTC and MSUM, confirm dates with MCARI and
then get back with everyone as dates are confirmed.
iii.
One Level II Training - Oct 30th, 31st
and Nov. 1st – This is a team training and a great
opportunity to train new members of teams. The training will be for
30 to 45 people.
iv.
Level III – This training is a more intensive team
training. It will help each of the teams develop their plans and
think about how to implement these plans within each of the
institutions. By then the survey will be completed along with the
institutional history surveys. This information will be used in the
plan development. January 29-31 and February 5-7 were chosen as
the two weekends to have the Level III training. Phyllis
will double check on the timing to make sure that it is for Thurs.
evening and all day Friday and Saturday.
V.
General Discussion – Initiative at Each Institution:
Phyllis and Amy will
be meeting with each of the teams in the Collaborative to talk about
the new grant, the money allocated and contracting for work.
NDSU
·
Will be hosting a Potluck Reunion for the Level I
trainees. They will give an update on Collaborative, announcements
on the new grant, and the Level II training.
·
They have formed three subgroups to begin working on
the institutional plan.
·
They have received institutional funding for two Level
I trainings from the President’s Office.
Concordia.
·
Had a productive task force last year. A list of
recommendations was presented to the former and current presidents.
·
The task force was for one year and the future of the
task force is currently unclear.
·
There is immense interest with first year students in
working on issues of race and diversity and Kate Olson, the Vista
volunteer, will be working with this.
·
Joy and JJ will be meeting with the Community
Relations Committee (CRC) to discuss TOCAR issues. Michelle Stevier
has just been elected to the CRC.
MSCTC
·
Phyllis reported that the college has experienced
administrative reorganization but Claudia Simon is continuing the
work of TOCAR on that campus. This work includes: administering the
campus assessments in Oct., examining their placement policies in
terms of internships and employment, and rebuilding their team. The
team is planning a commissioning this year, and is working with
their president to identify the institutional role.
MSUM
·
