regarding a response to
the World Trade Ctr and DC attack. Jan
and Jill will write draft and circulate to collaborative.
2.
We received a report on the 8/31 luncheon and thanked Amy and
Phyllis for their work.
3.
It was announced that Andrew Conteh, MSUM, will develop a Human
Rights Institute in
the Fargo – Moorhead community and that
Andrew is interested in giving free public talks
on human rights. We will schedule him to
speak at the Collaborative’s December 11 meeting.
4. Locations were
set for our next meetings: Oct – Concordia, Nov
- NDSU, Dec – MSUM.
5.
Campus Updates:
*NTC – in process of electing new student
government; Amy and Phyllis will assist Ted
by meeting with Pres. Swanson and
VP Smestad.
*NDSU
– Brent Scarpo’s “Journey
to a Hate Free Millenium” speech on hate crimes
was excellent and had an impact on
the campus. “What is a White Person: Re-reading my
ND History" will be presented at NDSU at 7:30 on Thurs Sept 20 in Beckwith Recital Hall.
The
Diversity Council will look
over TOCAR training sessions web on March 11 or in April.
*Concordia – The topic of the annual Student
Faculty Retreat (1.5 days) was anti-racism
and 35-40
people attended the
retreat which included an anti-racism training. The retreat
produced new commitment and
understanding of
diversity and community relations and very
concrete strategies for assessing
diversity in the college strategic plan. Dates for fall Principia
training are Oct 7 and Nov 17-18.
*MSUM – Tentative dates for anti-racism training are
Jan 31-Feb 1.
6.
Phyllis passed out revised portions of the grant proposal and asked
that each campus
contact Amy or Phyllis
by Friday 9/14 with any revisions.
7. Phyllis noted
that institutional assessment was missing in the original draft of
the work plan so it
has been added to the latest
draft. Amy suggested that 2 representatives from each
campus take part in the development of an
institutional assessment tool. Adaptation of
existing assessment tool. Adaptation of existing assessment tools and the use of assessment
teams at
NDSU and Concordia were discussed.
8. John Kostishack,
director of the Bremer Foundation, was enthusiastic about the
proposal, Phyllis reported.
9. Other
suggestions for the proposals: Harvey, Sandy, and Larry recommended
that the Human
and Civil Rights Commissions of Fargo
and Moorhead be discussed in the proposal. Harvey
and Chelle recommended an addition to
"Expected outcomes" portion of the proposal which
would speak to the institutions'
civic role in the community.
10. Phyllis and Amy requested
additional information on in-kind or matching funds from NDSU and
NTC for the budget. NDSU and
NTC will contact Amy or Phyllis with this information by
Friday.
11. Letters of institutional
support are needed by Monday, 9/17 Tri-College University Provost
Nathan Davis is also writing a letter
of support. Phyllis passed out a list of "talking
points"
or tips that could be used for support
letters.
12. Communication of TOCAR
activities to others was discussed including linking TOCAR
web pages with campus, NDSU University
Council, and other web pages.
13. NDSU members offered to
host the Nov 15-16 training for 40-50 people, with
approximately 10
representatives from each
campus, including members of the TOCAR
Collaborative. NDSU members will work out details. At
the next TOCAR Collaborative
meeting, it will be decided if Concordia's Vista
volunteers will be able to join this training.
14. It was agreed that at the
next TOCAR Collaborative meeting, each institution would come
with the names of the individuals who will
officially represent their institution on the
Collaborative. It is hoped
that each institution will
have at least 10 names and that these people
will begin attending Collaborative
meetings.
MSUM has found it helpful to have an active
TOCAR group on its campus that meets
regularly to
discuss the TOCAR initiative on its
campus.
The other institutions were encouraged to start a TOCAR group on their campuses.
The next meeting of the
Collaborative is Tuesday, October 9, 4:00 at Concordia (exact
location to be determined.)
