January 14, 4:00 at Concordia
Assignments
are in bold.
I.
Updates
1.) Paul
Boswell reported that the ND University System Diversity Council has
submitted an anti-racism training proposal to the ND Board of Higher
Education. The
Diversity Council is waiting to hear from the Board on whether the
proposal is approved. A conference call regarding the proposal will take place on
12/12.
2.) Claudia
Simon reported that the Technical Colleges will be undergoing a US
Commission on Civil Rights audit in April.
This is a follow-up audit to a Commission study of the Tech
Colleges that took place in the late 1990s.
3.) Prairie
Rose told the group about the NDSU Student Senate discussion and
resolution regarding the use of the UND logo and nickname at NDSU
events. The resolution discouraged the use of the nickname on the
NDSU campus. Prairie
and Sandy talked about how energetic the 2-hour discussion was and
that it was inspiring to students honestly discussing the issue and
influencing each other's opinions.
Prairie Rose will try
to track down a video of the meeting which could be used for
educational purposes on the campuses.
3.) Amy
Phillips reported on upcoming Level 1 trainings during the Spring
semester. MSUM will be
sponsoring 4 trainings for the MSUM community (February 11, 13, 21,
22) and NDSU will be sponsoring a training for their campus on
February 20). Two UND
law school faculty will also be attending the NDSU training.
Once Phyllis and Amy
confirm the participants for the MSUM trainings, they will notify
the Collaborative members of any openings in the trainings in case
the other institutions want to send people to be trained.
II.
Institutional Assessment
Kay updated the group on the process of the
Institutional Assessment Committee.
The Committee is working on its final draft of the survey and
hopes to send it to IRBs in early January.
Kay distributed the most recent draft and the group gave
feedback on it. Concerns were again raised regarding the length of the tool
and a suggestion was made regarding placing an additional heading on
one page to break up the long list of questions.
Prairie suggested that, if possible, someone should be
available to introduce and discuss the tool with people before they
take it. Amy talked
about the intention to provide incentives on each campus -- discount
coupons to the bookstore or being entered in a lottery.
Sandy expressed concern that the TOCAR survey
would be coinciding with the other diversity survey that will be
conducted at NDSU in the spring.
Sandy will be talking with the assessment committee to
determine how best to handle this issue.
III.
Open Discussion
The group proceeded to have an open discussion
regarding some of the struggles that are developing on the campuses
related to moving the initiative forward.
Struggles identified include inertia, the training content,
fear, lack of clarity on team role/responsibilities, lack of time,
individual and institutional resistance, and lack of respect for the
work. This discussion,
including strategies to address the struggles, will continue in
upcoming meetings.
The meeting adjourned at approximately 5:00
