B.A. DEGREE IN MATHEMATICS
The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in mathematics is designed to prepare students to enter graduate school in mathematics or in other disciplines that require a strong background in mathematics. This degree is also appropriate for students seeking a solid liberal arts degree that will enable them to be successful in a wide variety of careers.
Students pursuing a B.A. are required to take CSIS 152, MATH 260, MATH 261, MATH 262, MATH 310, MATH 323, MATH 327, MATH 361, MATH 362, MATH 476, and MATH 491 as well as twelve credits of mathematics electives at the 300 or 400 level. You may find a worksheet for the B.A. here.
  B.S. DEGREE IN MATHEMATICS
The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in mathematics is a professional degree with three different emphases: the Actuarial Science Emphasis, the Computational Emphasis, and the Teaching Emphasis.
The Core Required courses for the B.S. are MATH 260, MATH 261, MATH 262, MATH 310, MATH 323, MATH 327 and MATH 335.
  ACTUARIAL SCIENCE EMPHASIS
This emphasis will help prepare students to become actuaries. The professional services of actuaries are needed in areas of insurance and employee benefit programs. Actuaries are required to have an understanding of the mathematical structure underlying insurance and pensions, and thus must have a strong background in mathematics, statistics and business.
In addition to the Core courses, students pursuing a B.S. with the actuarial science emphasis are required to take MATH 336, MATH 421, MATH 435, MATH 491, and MATH 361 or MATH 451. Students must also take ACCT 230, ACCT 231, CSIS 152, ECON 202, ECON 204, FINC 340, and FINC 360. You may find a worksheet for the B.S. with an actuarial science emphasis here.
  COMPUTATIONAL EMPHASIS
This emphasis is for students who wish to prepare themselves for industrial careers that involve problem solving using computer technology.
In addition to the Core courses, students pursuing a B.S. with the computational emphasis are required to take MATH 355, MATH 366, MATH 450, MATH 451, and MATH 361 or MATH 435 as well as three credits of mathematics electives at the 300 or 400 level. Students must also take CSIS 152, CSIS 252, CSIS 335. You may find a worksheet for the B.S. with a computational emphasis here.
  TEACHING EMPHASIS
This emphasis is for students who intend to teach mathematics at the middle school or high school level. In addition to the requirements in the Mathematics Department, students must complete the "Professional Education Sequence" of courses required for Teaching Licensure.
In addition to the Core courses, students pursuing a B.S. with the teaching emphasis are required to take MATH 316, MATH 361, MATH 416, MATH 476, MATH 486, and MATH 487. You may find a worksheet for the B.S. with teaching emphasis here.
  MINOR IN MATHEMATICS
The mathematics department offers three different minors in mathematics: the Minor in Mathematics, the Minor in Mathematics Education, and the Minor in Mathematics: Elementary Education Major. Please see the Undergraduate Catalog for a description of the course requirements for any of these minors.
