Keyboard Pedagogy FAQ

Mus 431A and Mus 431B

Keyboard Pedagogy is a year-long course in which students learn how to teach piano.  This course is open to music majors and music minors with instructor approval (see Dr. Manno, CA #104).  It begins in the fall of even-numbered years.  Frequently asked questions:

May I take this course if I teach piano lessons now, or have done so in the past?

Yes.  Students who would like to learn more about teaching materials, methodology, developing a teaching studio, etc., may enroll in this course with instructor permission.

What topics are covered in this course?

The focus of the first semester is a wide-ranging base of knowledge covering several topics, including pedagogical materials, teaching techniques, student practice strategies, posture, ear training, and teaching basic theory concepts.  The second semester is conducted primarily as a seminar.  Students actually give someone piano lessons as the central activity of this term.

Can students in the second semester course give their piano lessons on campus?

Yes.  Students routinely use the practice rooms in the Center for the Arts for these activities.

Is it possible to take only one semester of this course?

No.  This continuing course was designed with the student in mind.  The two semesters must be taken consecutively.

This course always has strict limitations on class size.  Register early, if possible, and see Keyboard Pedagogy Requirements for more information.
