Internet & Computer Use Policy
The Internet contains information of varied quality and content. Minnesota State University Moorhead’s Livingston Lord Library does not limit access to material available over the Internet, nor does it protect users from finding information they may consider controversial or inappropriate.
The acceptable use of the Library’s computing facilities is in support of research, library instruction and instructional technology training, and other intellectual pursuits consistent with Minnesota State University Moorhead’s mission and objectives.
Users are to follow all University policies related to computer resources. See the Computer Center’s statement – Guidelines for use of MSUM Computer and Network Systems – available on the Internet.
Minnesota State University Moorhead's Library affirms the right of each individual to have access to constitutionally protected material. According to the American Library Association’s Bill of Rights, materials should “not be excluded because of the origin, background, or views of those contributing to their creation.”
While the Library recognizes the right of all users to access resources of their choosing, Internet users in the Library have the responsibility to be aware of materials that may be objectionable to others when using computers in the Library. Library equipment may not be used to display or print materials that might be defined as harassing or obscene. Library staff reserve the right to call Campus Security if they suspect possible policy infractions.
Priority of Use
Computers in the LI 222 lab are for priority use for instruction, and then are for use by current Tri-College & MSCTC students, faculty, and staff only. Computers elsewhere in the Library are for priority use by Tri-College & MSCTC students, faculty, and staff. You may be asked to show your current Tri-College or MSCTC identification card.
The Library is a facility for research. Because Library computer resources are limited, the Library’s computers are not to be used for Internet “chat” or game playing. Reading e-mail is considered a "priority" use of Library computers when used for academic purposes.
Copyright
“Federal copyright law prohibits making unauthorized copies of copyrighted materials (such as commercial software, text, graphic images, audio, and video recordings) or unauthorized distributing of copyrighted materials over computer networks or through other means” (Guidelines for Use of MSUM Computer and Network Systems). Software provided in the Library can only be used on the computer equipment specified in the software license. It is against University policy to copy or reproduce any licensed software on University computing equipment, except as expressly permitted by the software license. Users may not use unauthorized copies of software on University-owned computers or on personal computers housed in University facilities.
Computer Equipment
The public computer equipment in the Library is paid for by the University’s Computer Use Fee and is also governed by those rules and policies.
