Location and Description

The Library Instruction/Instructional Technology (LIT) Center is a hands-on, electronic classroom funded by a MnSCU Electronic Academy Initiative Grant, as well as a Moorhead State Strategic Initiatives Grant. Located on the second floor of Livingston Lord Library, Room 222, the LIT Center accommodates 40 students (two per workstation).

The LIT Center is equipped with:

26 computer workstations
Instructor workstation with Proxima projector system
SMARTBoard
1 drop-down projection screen
1 laser printer
Overhead projector

All workstations are connected to various MSUM campus network databases, including the WebPALS Online Catalog, WebPALS Periodicals Databases, many periodicals databases, and Internet access using Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer.

Policy on Scheduling and Use

Priority Use

The primary use for this room is for library instruction and instructional technology training for Minnesota State University Moorhead students, faculty, and staff. Priority use is for instruction relating to library resources and instructional technology training - specifically requiring hands-on access to electronic resources.

When the LIT Center is not in use for library instruction or instructional technology training, we reserve the right to ask LIT Center users for their current MSUM or Tri-College identification card.

The LIT Center will be open for student's computing needs, when not in use for library instruction or instructional technology training, during the following hours during Fall, Spring, and Summer Sessions.. The LIT Center is closed during campus holidays and breaks:

Mon. - Thurs. -- 7:30 am - 11:45 pm

Fri. -- 7:30 am - 4:45 pm

Sat. -- 1:00 pm - 4:45 pm

Sun. -- 1:30 pm - 11:45 pm

For Reference assistance (e.g., research, information needs, or questions regarding WebPALS or other library databases), students may inquire at the Reference Desk (1^st floor, Library). We will not provide support for technical computer questions (i.e., word processing, hardware or software questions, spreadsheets, etc.). For technical computer assistance, go to LI 202, 203, or 204, in the Computer Center. A lab assistant should be on duty during the following hours: Mon-Thurs. 12-11 p.m.; Fri. 12-5 p.m.; Sun. 5-11 p.m. **

Scheduling Procedures

Library Instruction

Faculty must contact a Librarian to schedule library-related instruction. Belle Nelson and Carol Sibley are the two primary contact persons to schedule library instruction:

Faculty interested in library instruction for their classes (including Internet-based course-integrated instruction) should contact Belle Nelson (nelsonb@mnstate.edu; 477-5919) to schedule a session in the LIT Center or LI 131.

To schedule library instruction in the use of Curriculum Materials Center or Teacher Education resources, faculty should contact Carol Sibley (sibley@mnstate.edu; 236-2347).

Instructional Technology Training

All sessions are to be taught only during times the Library is open.

Rules of Use

You may be required to show your current MSUM or Tri-College identification card.
Absolutely no food or drink.
No application software may be altered, added, or removed from the computers. All requests for software applications must go through Stacy Voeller (voeller@mnstate.edu; 236-2348).
During open lab times, students and faculty using software only available in the LIT Center, along with students using library databases and resources pertaining to research, will have priority.
Do not print multiple copies of documents of any kind on the laser printer. One copy per document is allowed. If you need further duplication, photocopy machines are located on the 1^st and 2^nd floors of the Library.
During use as a lab, if you leave your workstation unattended for longer than 15 minutes it will be assumed you have left and the computer may be made available for the next person.
The only equipment available to LIT Center users is the student computer stations and the printer.
The LIT Center instruction schedule will be posted in the display case next to the entrance to Room 222, near the entry doors to the library, and also on the Library Instruction Web Site at http://www.mnstate.edu/library/instruct Vacate room at least 10 minutes before a class session.
