Students who are studying in the Department are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to study abroad. Studying abroad completely immerses students in the language and culture of the study abroad program.
Students who wish to study abroad should work closely with their faculty advisor to plan a course of study that will apply to their major and minor coursework at MSUM.
MSUM is affiliated with the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP), which allows students to pay tuition at MSUM and attend other ISEP Universities all over the world.
Departmental exchange programs include:
Spanish: The department's program to Cuernavaca, Mexico gives students an intense immersion program in Spanish that lasts for 6 weeks every spring. Students attend classes at the Universidad Internacional (UNINTER) and the credits are transferable to MSUM. Students have the option to stay with carefully selected local families and can participate in excursions to nearby cultural attractions including the ruins of Xochicalco and Teotihuacán.
Chinese: For students in East Asian Studies wishing to focus on Chinese, Nankai University in Tianjin, China, offers them a study abroad opportunity. Students can choose to study there for one semester or a whole year. They will earn 12 - 16 credits per semester through Minnesota State University Moorhead while studying at Nankai University. Students also have the option of earning credits through an internship in China.
Japanese: East Asian Studies students interested in studying Japanese abroad have four exchange programs to consider: Kanda University of International Studies (KUIS) in Chiba Japan which is near Tokyo, Kanto Gakuin University in Yokohama (a 4 month program, Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University, and Nagoya Gakuin University in Nagoya Gakuin Seto, Japan. Students with strong Japanese language skills and an interest in being fully immersed in the culture are encouraged to select an exchange at either University. Each program is an intensive Japanese Language concentration.
