About the Department
Our department teaches courses in Chinese, Japanese, French & Spanish. We offer six degree options. Majors are offered in East Asian Studies (B.S.), Spanish (B.A.) and Spanish Education (Teaching) (B.S.) and options for minors include East Asian Studies, Spanish and Spanish Education (Teaching).
We have seven full time faculty. Four Spanish faculty, two East Asian Studies faculty (one in Chinese and one in Japanese) and one faculty member in French. In addition we often have several adjunct and fixed-term faculty teaching in the department. Our faculty are well versed in foreign language pedagogy and the smaller class sizes allow students to maintain close working relationships with faculty members.
It is advised that students begin to study a foreign language or continue the study of a foreign language in the fall semester of their freshman year.
Students who are studying in the Department are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to Study Abroad. We have exchange programs and connections with other study abroad programs in China, Japan and Mexico. Exchange programs in East Asian Studies include Nankai University in China and Kanda, Nagoya & Kanto Gakuin Universities in Japan. Our exchange program in Spanish is with the Universidad Internacional in Cuernavaca, Mexico. Students who wish to study abroad should work closely with a faculty advisor in order to plan a course of study that will apply to their major or minor coursework here.
In addition to the exchange programs, the department has offered educational trips led by our faculty to Mexico (Yucatán), Spain, Costa Rica, China, France and Japan International Programs at MSUM.
