General Overview of the Program


Professor Benjamin Smith is inviting you to join us on a trip to Guanajuato, Mexico for a five-week intensive program focusing on Spanish Language and Culture. In addition to 3 rigorous academic courses, the participants will experience many of the cultural wonders of Guanajuato, Mexico, including museums and tours. Students will get a glimpse of life and culture in Guanajuato, Mexico living with Mexican host families in an effort to maximize their language acquisition.


Academics


The Minnesota State University Moorhead program in Guanajuato, Mexico will provide students with up to 9 academic credits upon successful completion of the program. Students will enroll in 3 courses: the Minnesota State University Moorhead course and two University of Guanajuato courses of their choosing.  Students’ language level and consequently the courses in which they are eligible to enroll will be determined by a Spanish placement exam administered on-site by University of Guanajuato. Proposed Itinerary


The Minnesota State University Moorhead program will be 5 weeks in duration. Students will depart the United States on May 22, 2010 and will depart Guanajuato, Mexico on June 26, 2010. The program excursions will consist of trips to San Miguel de Allende and Teotihuacán.

A tentative program itinerary is as follows: May 23: Depart the U.S., Arrive in Guanajuato, Mexico and check-in to housing. May 24: Orientation meeting and tour of Guanajuato, Mexico. Classes begin. May 24-28: Class Monday through Friday 6 hrs/ day. May 29: Excursion to Teotihuacán. May 30: Free day. May 31-June 4: Class Monday through Friday. June 5: Excursion to Museo de las Momias. June 6: Free day. June 7-11: Class Monday through Friday. June 12: Excursion to San Miguel de Allende. Students can stay overnight if they wish but they are responsible for covering extra costs. June 13: Free day. June 14-18: Class Monday through Friday. June 19-20: Free weekend. June 21-25: Class Monday through Friday (last day of class). June 26: Depart for the U.S. or stay for independent travel.
