News from around the league and MCLA Moorhead Welcomes Augsburg College to UMLL Play By G. F. Gallagher MINNEAPOLIS (February 16, 2008) — Augsburg College entertained its first conference foe on Saturday night when the Dragons of Minnesota State University – Moorhead visited the Augsburg Dome. The temperature both inside and outside was uncharacteristically mild but there was a chill in the air as the previously effective Auggie attack suffered from cold shooting all evening. Moorhead gamely took the field with only twelve players, but with clearly superior ball-handling was able to make its lack of numbers a non-factor as it defeated Augsburg 11-4 in a match that was not nearly as one-sided as the score would suggest. Going in, coach Zach Bosch acknowledged the challenge presented by his short roster, but also projected a definite confidence in his group’s skills and a desire to evaluate his group against an admittedly worthy foe: “[We’ll rely on] our experience, our depth and our knowledge, not to become overbearing on a first-year squad, but to test our skills out against them, and to see how our program stacks up against them. We want to show that we are an experienced squad, but we also don’t have the depth of some schools, so it’s kind of hard to gauge ourselves . . . against somebody like Eau Claire or St. John’s.” Augsburg coach Jon Harris was cautiously optimistic going in and, like his counterpart, premised his team’s chances for victory on playing their game and, in addition, staying out of man-down situations. The quality of play was remarkably even well into the first half, although the Dragons managed to chip away in steady but non-spectacular fashion throughout. Sophomore midfielder Wade Wilson opened the game’s scoring for Moorhead with a nice crossing pattern that culminated in an unassisted goal into the upper right corner. Both teams were able to sustain a steady level of energy through the contest, with Augsburg moving the ball well and actually appearing to get the better of the contest, at least in everything but the score, in the first quarter. Nonetheless, as the game wore on and the Dragons were able to pad their lead, especially in second half, it became clear that there would be no Augsburg comeback despite some timely, if late, scoring. Weariness, surprisingly, did not appear to take its expected toll on Moorhead in the fourth quarter, perhaps owing to the adrenaline rush resulting from the knowledge that they had the game in hand by that time. It was apparent by then that the Dragons had collectively decided they would not get tired. Twelve men or not, they would safeguard their advantage until the horn allowed them the luxury of fatigue. The Augsburg goals were scored by Charlie Olson, Ryan Polehonak, Dan Martin and Andy Burgeson. The Dragons’ sophomore middie Josh Yue led all scorers with five points off his two goals and three assists, while teammate Zach Holoch had three goals for Moorhead.
