The habitat preferences of the waterbucks very much reflects their name. Kenya has two species, the common and the DeFassa's. The easiest way to tell them apart is by their rumps. David, our tour guide, described them so well. He said that one looked like a toilet seat, and the other was like a toilet with the lid down. Although many of the African antelope species seemed deer-like to me in both their body shape and behavior, they're all in the cow family, Bovidae. The white lines above the eyes on this buck give him a perpetual scowl. And note the notch in the right ear. I have to assume that this is a sparring scar from fighting with another buck. The urge to merge (sex drive) gets males of any species into all sorts of trouble! |
