Paul was our naturalist-guide at Camp Delamere. He knowledge of plants and animals was mind-boggling. Before becoming gainfully employed in the tourist business, he had been a successful poacher. I remember him pointing to a pile of dung in the trail and saying, "Bush pig. Two, maybe three days old." He told a story of being chased by a Cape buffalo. He ran in circles around a tree until the buffalo got tired of chasing him and went away. If he hadn't done that, he would not have been around to talk with us. See the book in his hand? He carried it to show to white folk, because, he said, they didn't believe what he told them about medicinal uses for plants unless it was written in a book by other white folk. He was Kikuyu, but he said that the Masai knew far more about plants than his people. |
