Samburu National Park in northern Kenya is closed to livestock, but in a countryside this dry the temptation is always there for a herder to sneak his cattle across the river to better grazing. When the youngs boys tending this herd saw our van they started to run and drive the cattle back across the river. After having seen the size of the Nile crocodiles that lurked in these waters, you wouldn't catch me wading across! But then, my survival, wealth and status didn't depend on a herd of scrawny, hungry cows. Local whites were incredulous to see Americans in Kenya that year because they knew that our state department was advising no travel due to civil unrest related to the upcoming elections. There had also been an incident where German tourists were killed by bandits from Tanzania. We had no problems. |
