Common or Burchell's zebra is distinguished by broad stripes.   The zebra herds migrate ahead of the wildebeests for the most part, but the natural migration patterns of Kenya's wildlife There's still some disagreement whether this wild horse is black with white stripes or vice versa.  Each animal has a unique pattern of striping.  A mare that's ready to foal moves away from the rest of the herd.   That way her newborn imprints on her appearance only and is strongly bonded to stay with her.  It's vital to know who Mom is because a mare will only suckle her own foal.  Why waste your energy suckling a baby who doesn't carry your genes!
