When the Belize Zoo moved from its original site to its current location, the animals' received larger and more natural quarters.  The largest mammal in Belize is the jaguar.  This spectacular cat is spotted somewhat like the Asian/African leopard, but has a more compact and sturdy build.  The black color phase is uncommon.  Like too many other species, jaguars are endangered in the wild due to overhunting and habitat destruction.  Belize has a jaguar preserve in the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary.  These particular animals were born in American zoos.
