FIREWORKS, FOOD AND FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT
HEADLINE MSU'S OLD FASHION 4TH OF JULY Moorhead, MN....Moorhead State
University will kick off its 17th annual old-fashioned 4th of July
celebration at 1 p.m., beginning an afternoon of family entertainment
followed by a fireworks display at dusk over Nemzek Field.
The Tuesday Independence Day celebration features continuous stage
entertainment all afternoon along with games for children and adults.
Refreshments will sell at old-fashioned prices.
This year's event will have a different look because of a major
construction project on the campus mall. "Most of the events will
surround the library," said MSU 4th of July celebration director Ron
Matties. "We'll be using land we haven't used before. Other than
that, everything will be the same."
Events begin with a 1 p.m. opening ceremony followed by a children's
decorated bicycle parade and contest. Stage entertainment--scheduled at
the back of the library--starts right away with Johnny Flag's Fourth of
July Band followed by a variety of music, dance and song. Also featured
all afternoon will be cartoon shows in Weld Hall auditorium, magicians,
hay rides, children's games and planetarium shows. Bingo will be held
inside this year, in the student union ballroom.
A forum on the recent turmoil in China will meet at 4 p.m. in the library
porch featuring an MSU professor, Sylvia Morgan, and MSU senior, Jill
Trites from Pelican Rapids, who were caught in China during the government
crackdown on students. Also part of the forum will be Shubo Xu, a visiting
professor from Tianjin; Peter Geib, who recently returned from seven
months of teaching in China; a moderator Bob Badal, an MSU dean who also
visited China recently. A community picnic supper will be served from 4:30
to 6 p.m. in Kise Commons, the campus dining hall. Call 236-3265 for
reservations.
Other entertainment is scheduled at 8:30 p.m. before the fireworks display
at dusk over Nemzek Field, including a drop by the Valley Skydivers in
front of the football grandstand. Also performing will be Bergmann's
Orchestra of Roros Norway and the Roros Folk dances. The F-M Chamber
Chorale, directed by Alice Fasman, will present a program of traditional
songs and singalongs just before the fireworks begin. Anyone interested in
joining the performance with the chorale that evening can attend a
rehearsal at 7 p.m. Sunday, July 2 in room 148 of MSU's Center for the
Arts and at 8 p.m. on July 4.
