MSC Sets Busy Schedule for Old Fashioned Fourth

Moorhead State College has added a Norwegian band for a concert appearance and Charlie Bengston's Old-Timers for an evening country dance to this year's Old-Fashioned Fourth of July at the college Friday.

The Sensin Youth Band of Oslo, Norway is scheduled for a concert at 2:30 p.m. and the old-time dance is to start 6:30 p.m. in Lommen Hall Gym.

The Alumni Association will hold a 5 p.m. picnic again, open to the public, but reservations are needed and only 400 meals are being planned.

The day's schedule starts with the opening of planetarium shows at 11 a.m. Grand opening is with a flag raising ceremony by Boy Scouts, Campfire Girls and MSC President Roland Dille at 12:30 p.m.

Rep. David Beauchamp, DFL-Moorhead, will speak at 12:50, square dancing starts at 1:30, hayrides and free movies will be held beginning at the same time, a children's costume contest starts at 2:30, a pie-eating contest is scheduled for 3:30, and a model airplane demonstration is scheduled at 8 p.m. at Nemzek Field.

Two bands are scheduled in the afternoon, children's games are planned, and the Straw Hat Players summer theatre will present "Finishing Touches" at 8:40 p.m. and "What's a Nice Country Like You Doing in a State Like This" at 11 p.m.

Free lemonade and balloons will be available along with hot dogs, ice cream, popcorn and coffee at 1930's prices. Families are invited to bring picnic lunches. Care and entertainment for pre-school children is free.

One thousand people attended the first Old Fashioned Fourth of July in 1973 and 2,000 came in 1974. Tickets for the barbecue picnic, at $1.50 for adults and $1 for children, are expected to be sold out quickly.

As with last summer's celebration, the theme of this year's is keyed to a special MSC summer session theme on one aspect of the nation's bicentennial in 1976.

This summer's theme is "Our Ethnic Heritage". People are encouraged to wear clothes showing the area's ethnic heritage. Persons wanting to demonstrate skills or perform may contact Lois Selberg at MSC.

The Moorhead American Legion will again present its traditional evening fireworks display.
