Minnesota State University Moorhead is enrolled in the McAfee Grant License program through a special agreement negotiated by the MnSCU system office. This agreement provides the university with renewable rights to install Virex for the Mac on our campus computers.
The Grant License program gives the university the right to install and run the Virex software on all university-owned Macintosh computers for the length of the contract. It also allows university employees to run the software on home computers under certain conditions.
McAfee Virex offers a free Home Use option. Any employee may use the software free of charge during the subscription period. Employees must remove the software from their computer if they are no longer employed by the university."
No. The Program does not include a student option.
Yes. AVG offers free antivirus software for personal use from Grisoft. This product is a good choice for student-owned computers and employee-owned computers that are not eligible for Virex or Symantec.
A summary of the Value License Program policies is available online. The complete Network Associates Grant License is on file at the Computer Center and may be reviewed during regular business hours.
As of August 2006, Macintosh System OS 9x and greater are supported.
Virex requires specific computer resources and may not run well on some older computers. The Virex system requirements are available online.
Installing the Virex software on your computer is only the first step to protecting your computer from virus infection. You must update the virus software regularly, to maintain the protection. We recommend that you run the eUpdate utility once a week (while connected to the Internet) to maintain your virus protection.
Virex antivirus software is installed on each new computer. Campus installations are set to update automatically each time the computer is started. If you have concerns that your antivirus software is not updating, email support@mnstate.edu or call the Information Technology Department. Additional information is available online.
You may check out the software from the Information Technology Department AFTER you complete an Employee Users Acceptance form. Complete instructions for checkout are online.
The Employee Users Acceptance form is available online as a printable-pdf file or you may pick one up from the Information Technology Department.
Support for home computers will be limited to allowing you to checkout the CD again to reinstall the software.
