I am a new student. How do I get a campus email address?

Your Dragon Mail account is created when you are admitted. If you do not know your Username, go to the Dragon Mail page and click on the Account Management link. Login with your Dragon ID and PIN. Your account information including your username and email address will be displayed. If you do not know your password, click on the Change Password link and follow the on screen instructions.

I just received an email account and it gave me an email address I don't like. Can I change it?

Username changes are allowed under some conditions. Email your request to support@mnstate.edu or call 477-2603.

I just received an email account. How do I check my mail?

Open a browser and either click on the email link at the top of the MSUM Home Page or go to https://dragonmail.mnstate.edu. Enter the username you were assigned and the password you chose. Do I have to use Dragon Mail to check my email?

Dragon Mail is the most popular way for MSUM students to check email because it can be accessed from any computer with an internet connection. However, MSUM does support IMAP clients such as Mozilla, Outlook, and Safari. You can also forward your emails to a different email account using the Dragon Mail forwarding instructions.

Why did I get a message saying I have to change my email account password?

Changing your password helps keep your email account secure. All email account passwords must be changed every three months. You will get a message when your password needs to be changed. You can change your password anytime.

What do I do if I forget my email account username password?

Go to the MSUM home page at http://www.mnstate.edu and click on the email link at the top of the page. On the Dragon Mail page, click on the Account Management link beneath the login and password boxes. Enter your Dragon ID an PIN. You username is listed on the management page. You may change your password by clicking on the Change Password link on the left side of the page. Follow the on screen instructions.

I can't access my email account. What is wrong?

  1. You might have forgotten to change your password. Remember that passwords need to be changed every three months for security reasons. If you don't change it, your account will lock up. Call Information Technology at 477-2603 to unlock it.
  2. You might have exceeded your quota of space. If you have a lot of emails, emails with large graphics, or you don't delete your messages, you might have filled up your space. In that case, you need to contact Information Technology at 477-2603. Avoid exceeding your quota by deleting all unnecessary messages and occasionally cleaning out the Trash and Sent folders.

I am going to be graduating from MSUM soon. Do I get to keep my email account?

Students may keep their account for up to one year after graduation.

I am a new faculty or staff member. How do I get an email account?

The HR department will send you to the Information Technology department to get an ID. While you're there, you may also get your email account. If you have problems with the account, or you would like to change the username, contact Information Technology at 477-2603.

How do I create a signature?

  • Login to your MSUM email account

  • Click Preferences tab

  • Select the Signatures tab

  • Click Edit button

  • In the signature text box, type your signature information

  • Click Done button 

  • Scroll down to the Using Signature section

  • Select where the signature should be placed in your message

  • Click Save

How do I create a privacy statement as part of my signature?

  • Login to your MSUM email account

  • Click Preferences tab

  • Select the Signatures tab

  • Click the Edit button 

  • In the signature text box, copy and paste the following statement:

    This e-mail message is intended only for the named recipient(s) above and is covered by the Electronic Communications Privacy Act 18 U.S.C. Section 2510-2521. This e-mail is confidential and may contain information that is privileged or exempt from disclosure under applicable law. If you have received this message in error please immediately notify the sender by return e-mail and delete this e-mail message from your computer.

  • Then type your signature information

  • Click the Done button 

  • Scroll down to the Using Signature section

  • Select where the signature should be placed in your message

  • Click Save

How do I create a folder?

  • Login to your MSUM email account

  • Click  on "New Folders" on left

  • Type desired folder name into Create new folder box

  • Click Create

How do I move messages into a folder?

  • Login to your MSUM email account

  • Click checkbox(es) in front of message(s) to be moved to select the messages

  • Right-click any of the selected messages

  • Select Move

  • In the Move Message box, select the destination folder

  • Click OK

How do I enter a Vacation message when I am going to be out of the office?

  • Go to MSUM Home Page and click on email link at top of page

  • Login with your email username and password

  • Click Preferences Tab

  • Click Mail Tab

  • Scroll down to Receiving Message Section

  • Check "send auto-reply message:"

  • Type in the message you want sent out  

      PLEASE NOTE:

      When you get back, just repeat the steps and uncheck the box in step 6 to remove the message.

How can I forward my Dragon Mail messages to another email account?

  • Go to MSUM Home Page and click on email link at top of page

  • Login with your email username and email password

  • Click Preferences Tab

  • Click Mail Tab

  • Scroll down to Receiving Messages Section

  • Under "When a message arrives: Forward a copy to : type in the forwarding address

  • Check the "Don't keep a local copy of messages" unless you intend to go in regularly and delete  mail  
    If you do not check this box and you do not regularly delete, your Inbox will fill up and you will  stop getting mail 

      PLEASE NOTE:

      If you check the box and do not enter a forwarding address, you will not receive any mail.  

How do I add addresses to my Dragon Mail Address Book?

   Method 1: Add Sender from Active Message

  • Go to MSUM Home Page and click on email link at top of page

  • Login with your email username and email password

  • Open Message from person you wish to add to your address book

  • Right-click on name in "Sent By" or "To:" line

  • Select "Add to Contacts" and contact information will be added to a contact page in the Address Book

  • Add any additional information you want

  • Click "Save"

  Method 2: Add contact directly to Address Book

  • Login to your MSUM email account

  • Select AddressBook

  • Click New > New Contact

  • Tab between fields to enter desired information (e.g., Name and email address)

  • Click Save

How do I delete an address from my Dragon Mail Address Book?

  • Login to your MSUM email account

  • Select Address Book

  • Click checkbox(es) in front of contact(s) to be removed

  • Right-click any of the selected messages

  • Select Delete

How do I create a mailing list (Contact Group)?

In Dragon Mail, mailing lists are created iby defining a New Contact Group for each list and then adding names from your Address Book or typing in addresses.

  • Login to your MSUM email account

  • Click Address Book tab

  • Select New > New Contact Group

  • Enter a name for the Contact Group

  • Click on Address Book button to select which address book

  • Add member to the group by either selecting from address list or typing into blank entry box

  • Click Save.

How do I send mail to members of my mailing list (Contact Group)?

  • Login to your MSUM email account

  • Select New

  • Click To: icon in the To box

  • Select desired Address Book from Show names from drop-down list

  • Scroll through contacts to find Contact Group desired.

  • Click To or Bcc button to send mail to all members of the Contact Group

  • Click OK

  • Compose message and send
