MSUM is pleased to offer eligible students the opportunity to study Mandarin Chinese Language and Culture at one of the Top 10 universities in China. Nankai University is located in Tianjin City, about 90 minutes from the capital city Beijing and 45 minutes from the seacoast. Students can study up to one year while living amidst a diverse population on or near campus. Qualified students may also apply for scholarships and financial aid to help defer costs.
MSUM prefers interested students have maintained at least a 3.00 GPA, and have some experience with the study of Chinese language and culture. The Nankai University program is ideal for 2nd and 3rd year East Asian Studies Majors. For others, Nankai College of Chinese Language and Culture offers beginning through advanced Mandarin studies.
The College of Chinese Language and Culture is a small part of the overall campus area, and is easy to get around. Shuttles run every weekday, so you can explore your new neighborhood. During registration/orientation, your placement results will determine which class you enter. From beginning to advanced Mandarin, there are 12 class levels, each containing specialized curricula for Listening, Speaking, and Literacy. Classes are held every weekday, with opportunities for additional culture studies each week. The typical credit load is 12-16 per semester. Up to 24 language credits can be transferred toward MSUM's East Asian Studies program. All classes at Nankai's College of Chinese Language and Culture are taught by qualified native speakers. Class sizes range from 10 - 40 students, with a variety of nationalities represented. Immersion studies at Nankai are both challenging and enriching. The HSK proficiency exam is offered once each semester and is non-compulsory.
Accommodations: Campus life is rich with opportunities to make new acquaintances, as dorms house students from all over the world. Each dorm room is set up for two students and contains a western bathroom, air conditioner, study areas, separate storage areas, and beds. You will receive a room key, and fresh bedding is provided regularly. An attendant is available at the front desk to answer questions or help you out during set hours. Some rooms are equipped with internet and cable TV access for additional charges. *It is important to tell Nankai of your intention to stay in a dorm room on your application. It is also possible to room with someone you know in this way.
Applying: You need to fill out an application for Nankai University by visiting the Office of International Programs located in Flora Frick 153. To complete the application you will need 4 passport-sized photos - 2 for now, 2 for later. It's important to complete the application forms early. If you want to begin with the Fall term, apply by March 1st. For Spring term, apply by October 1st. The spring term runs from late February through late June, beginning after Winter Holiday. Fall term starts after Summer Holiday, in late August and runs to the second week in January. Chinese holidays are commonly marked by the lunar calendar, so program dates change each year.
The City: Tianjin is a lively, growing city of nearly 10 million people. Located in the heart of its own special district, Tianjin City has a long rich history as an important trading port situated on the Hai River near the Bo Sea. Since the 16 th Century, Tianjin has seen waves of foreign influence which have left their marks in the forms of art and architecture throughout the city. Today there are museums, amusement parks, a zoo and shopping districts that make Tianjin attractive to people from all the world. Its proximity to Beijing and the Great Wall, coupled with a reasonable cost of living make Tianjin an ideal place to study Chinese culture and language. And Nankai's tradition of excellence means you will study with motivated students in an atmosphere that encourages academic success. There has never been a better time to learn Chinese!
