About Portsmouth
The University of Portsmouth's history very much parallels Minnesota State University Moorhead's. Beginning as a school of science and art in 1870, which once housed a "dancing saloon" of "somewhat dubious reputation," it later added a training college for women teachers, as well as serving as a municipal college. After several transformations over the years, it became a college of technology in 1957 and a polytechnic in 1969. And as the result of a 1992 Parliament conferring university status on polytechnic institutions, it was officially inaugurated as the University of Portsmouth on July 7, 1992.
The Campus
The University has a full-time and "sandwich" student population of almost 10,000, of whom 97 percent are on degree courses. There are some 2,000 part-time day and evening students. The campus is 42 percent women and 58 percent men.
University programs are housed in buildings spread throughout the city. Transportation between various sites is convenient through the use of city or shuttle buses. Students involved in the program will be housed in dormitories generally within walking distance of the major department.
Tuition and Costs
Students pay their normal tuition and fees directly to Minnesota State University Moorhead, but are responsible for paying their own airfare, housing costs, transportation and personal expenses. A current sample budget is on file in the Office of International Programs

Because class schedules are not available in advance, students must be aware that although every effort will be made to accommodate their academic needs, some flexibility will be necessary.
Orientation
MSUM coordinators of the program provide orientation sessions as they provide detailed information for planning for a successful experience. On-site orientation, known as an "introduction conference," is provided to all international students attending the University of Portsmouth, and students are encouraged to arrive early in order to participate in this conference.
Travel Opportunities
Students studying in Portsmouth for the full academic year will have 7 to 8 weeks between terms to travel independently.
Portsmouth is served by some 40 trains daily just to London. Ferries and hovercraft leave frequently and provide transportation to the Isle of Wight, the Channel Islands, and France (and the rest of the Continent of Europe). Students should have ample opportunities to travel and experience different cultures, both independently and though special field trips organized by the university.
