About The Centre for Mediaeval and Renaissance Studies

The Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies was founded in 1975 by Dr. John Feneley to achieve two purposes: (1) to establish in Oxford a permanent institute for the interdisciplinary study of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and (2) to provide an academic training for overseas students who wish to complete part of their education in Oxford but are not members of the University.

CMRS is affiliated to Keble College of the University of Oxford. Students admitted to CMRS during the fall and spring semester are also enrolled as Associate Students of Keble College.

The overall aim of CMRS is to provide each student with a rigorous training in particular disciplines within the context of a broad and well-balanced academic, cultural, and social life. Certain qualities are necessary if a student is to obtain maximum benefits from an education here: an inquiring mind, a critical approach to facts and, above all, a capacity for creative as well as analytical thought.

Credit Courses

Art, History, English, History, Languages, Philosophy, Political Science, Religious Studies.

Year/Semester Studies

Oxford Tutorial system of one-to-one teaching plus small seminar classes, Lectures, Field Trips. Associate status at Keble College.

Ten weeks of each semester coincides with the University's Michaelmas and Hilary Terms. The CMRS program of tutorials and seminars is planned to take full advantage of Oxford's academic and cultural life. The remaining four weeks are devoted to an Integral Course work of intensive lectures and field trips. During a semester a student takes four courses in all: two tutorial courses, one seminar course, and the Integral Course.
