Financial Aid and Scholarships

Apply early!  For many of the following scholarships / awards, application deadlines are before the application deadlines for most study abroad programs. 


MSUM Scholarships:

Gerry Haukebo Endowed Scholarship for Study Abroad -- MSUM has established an endowed scholarship for students participating in study abroad programs.  Named for former Vice President of Public Affairs Dr. Gerry Haukebo (who established the Office of International Programs in 1987), this scholarship will be awarded to 2 students $600 each studying abroad for the entire 2008-09 academic year on an MSUM or MSUM-affiliated program.  Application deadline will be in March 2008 for the 2008-09 award. David P Flint Endowed Scholarship -- Honors long-time Political Science Professor David P Flint.  Dr Flint wished to encourage students with limited means to participate in the Eurospring program, and this $500 scholarship is available to two MSUM students participating in Eurospring who demonstrate financial need.  Application deadline October 1 for the following Spring's program. 

Other financial aid / scholarship possibilities:

www.johntpettersfoundation.org John T. Petters Foundation offers scholarships to students who are United States Citizens and wish to study international business abroad. Applications are due on December 15th 2007 for students studying abroad in the summer of fall of 2008.

IIE Study Abroad Funding -- Comprehensive database of study abroad scholarships, fellowships, and grants can help make your dream of studying abroad a financial possibility and a profound reality.

Morgan Stanley Scholarship to Japan -- Morgan Stanley is awarding two $7,500 scholarships to US students who will be studying in Japan. Applications can be downloaded from their website. April 5 is the application deadline for studying in the fall. 

Bridging Scholarships -- The Association of Teachers of Japanese awards scholarships from $2,500 to $4,000 for students studying abroad in Japan.  Deadline to apply is early April for study in the Fall and early October for study in the Spring.

Freeman-Asia Award Program -- Offers awards of up to $7,000 for students who demonstrate financial need and are studying in an approved program in Asia.  Deadlines in April for study beginning the following Fall, October for study beginning the following spring.

Fulbright Awards -- Many awards available to graduating seniors, graduate students and developing professionals and artists. 

Gilman Scholarships -- Awards of up to $5,000 given to students studying abroad who are also receiving Pell Grants.  While these awards are competitive, several MSUM students have won Gilman scholarships in recent years, and application is encouraged to all qualifying students.  Deadlines April (for study Fall term) and September (Spring). 

International Education Financial Aid -- Provides free searches for study abroad.  Has few entries, but is worth a look. 

International Education Finance Corporation -- Specializes in giving loans for overseas study.

Japan America Society of Minnesota -- Sponsors the Mondale Award for Japan-Minnesota Partnership, which awards $3,000 yearly to Minnesota students studying in Japan (either 3 $1,000 awards or 2 of $1,500).

National Security Education Program -- Merit-based scholarships of up to $10,000 for a semester or $20,000 for a full year.  Given to students studying in non-traditional sites.  Recipient is expected to serve 12 months in either the Department of Defense, Department of State, Homeland Security or Intelligence Community (CIA, DIA, FBI, etc) within three years of graduation. NSEP now offers Summer Awards for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

Phi Kappa Phi -- Offers study abroad scholarships of $1,000 each.  Deadline January 15.

National Geographic Glimpse - Students apply and are "hired" as correspondents for the Glimpse project and are required to submit stories and photographs, and possibly videos. Correspondents are given a $600 stipend for their work and it is published by National Geographic. A great opportunity for Mass Comm, Film, and Photography students, but it a great experience for all those studying abroad.

Rhodes Scholarships -- Each year, 32 students from US colleges and universities receive all-expense paid, two-year scholarships for study at Oxford University through the Rhodes Trust. Deadline for applications usually in early October.

Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships -- Rotary International offers several scholarships to US students studying abroad.  Awards of up to $26,000 available.

University of Minnesota International Study and Travel Center Scholarships Database -- Search for study abroad scholarships from a variety of sources. 

Fastweb -- Searches for scholarships based on conditions you enter, sends regular email updates alerting you to awards which fit your description. 

GoAbroad - Search engine with entries for hundreds of scholarships, grants, fellowships, and other sources of funding for studying or interning abroad.

If you're studying overseas through a non-MSUM program, check if the program provider offers any additional scholarships aimed specifically at participating students.  Ex:  Independent program providers ISA and Australearn offer a limited number of scholarships available only to students participating in ISA and Australearn study abroad programs.
