Evaluation of Discussion

(Used with permission -- developed by L. Nelson)

If you are to develop as a thinker, you will need to develop as a writer as well. In this course your discussion takes the form of writing being we do not meet face-to-face. To develop as a writer, you must impose upon yourself the same standards that good writers impose upon themselves. The key question I will ask myself as I grade your written work is “What specifically does your writing demonstrate about your ability to reason/think?”

As you discuss/write, here are some key points you should keep in mind:

Each discussion assignment will be evaluated on the following scale.  If an assignment is worth 15pts, the scale will be adjusted accordingly.  For example, instead of 5 pts, the pts would range from 13-15 for excellent work, 10-12pts for good,  7-9pts for average, 4-6pts for below average, and 1-3pts for the lowest grade.

5 pts
  • Excellent in every respect.
  • Discussion has a clear development of the topic with consistent demonstrated thinking skills.
  • Precise and well-reasoned—doesn’t drift.
  • Writing demonstrates assumptions, inferences and creative thought.
  • Analyzes issues clearly, usually formulates information clearly, distinguishes the relevant from irrelevant, and usually recognizes key questionable assumptions.
  • Discussion indicates sensitivity to important implications and consequences.
4 pts
  • Good in most respects
  • Demonstrates more strengths than weaknesses
  • Clear in discussing the issue; precise, well-reasoned
3 pts
  • Acceptable.
  • Demonstrates more than a minimal level of skill, but is inconsistent.
  • Discussion has as many weaknesses as strengths.
2 pts
  • Demonstrates only a minimal level of understanding and skill in addressing the issue.
  • The discussion lacks substance and demonstration of much thought being put into the assignment.
  • Assignment has more weaknesses than strengths.
1 pt
  • Fails to demonstrate the thinking skills and abilities which are at the heart of this course.
  • Discussion is vague, imprecise and unreasoned --very little, if any, analysis of the issue.
  • Assignment appears to have been done pro forma, the student simply going through the motions without really putting any significant effort into thinking his or her way through them.
