MUSIC 342: HISTORY OF ROCK/POP MUSIC
SPRING 2001 (Instructor: Eric Hung)
RESEARCH PAPER REQUIREMENT

NOTE: No late papers will be accepted.

The 1500-word research paper is worth 25% of your final grade.  To fulfill this requirement, you have two options:

(1) Regular Option: 1500-word research paper on any topic related to popular music outside the U.S. and Britain
            DEADLINES:    Wednesday, March 28:  Hand in 150-word Abstract, Bibliography and Discography
                                                        (20% of paper grade)
                                         Wednesday, April 11: Hand in 1st Draft of Research Paper (30% of paper grade)
                                         Friday, April 27: Hand in Final Draft of Research Paper (50% of paper grade)

(2) Extra Credit Option: Research paper on any topic related to popular music
             DEADLINES:    Monday, February 5: Submit 150-word abstract, bibliography and discography to
                                                        instructor (20% of paper grade)
                                          Thursday, February 15: Student Academic Conference Application Due
                                          Monday, April 2: Submit draft of paper to be presented at SAC to instructor
                                                        (30% of paper grade)
                                          Wednesday, April 11: Student Academic Conference Presentation
                                          Wednesday, April 18: Final draft of research paper submitted to instructor
                                                        (50% of paper grade)

GRADING:    A = Well-written papers with a clear and substantial argument
                         B = Well-written papers with minor flaws in the argument OR
                                Well-written papers with an insubstantial argument OR
                                Well-argued papers with substantial writing problems
                         C = Papers that try to present an argument but contain major flaws in the argument AND major
                                writing problems
                         RE-WRITE/F = Papers that do not attempt to present an argument OR
                                Papers that border on incomprehensibility
