This schedule is subject to change.
Note: This unit is still worth 30% of your final grade. However, I
have made some changes to the breakdown of this unit's grading scheme.
TRANSCRIPTION ASSIGNMENT (50% of unit grade):
The major assignment for this unit is a transcription of Antoine Busnoys's
A
vous sans autre. This is a two-part assignment (outlined in chapters
4, 17 and 21 of Atlas), and you will be working in teams of two.
The deadlines are as follows:
1. Monday, October 30: Transcribing the Notes (Chapter 4; 25%
of unit grade)--One member of each team will transcribe the song from a
manuscript titled Dijon 517 (p. 46) and the other member will transcribe
the song from a manuscript titled the Mellon Chansonnier (p. 47).
2. Monday, November 13: Musica Ficta and Text Underlay (Chapters
17 and 21; 25% of unit grade)--Team members continue to work separately.
First, add editorial accidentals to the notes you transcribed; Second,
add the text to the notes you transcribed.
During the third unit, we will complete this assignment by comparing
the transcriptions made from the two manuscripts.
PREPARATION FOR FINAL PAPER (10% of unit grade):
The main assignment for unit 3 is a 1500-word essay. You have two options:
1. An analysis paper that compares two Italian madrigals with the same
text;
2. A research paper based on one of the topics covered in the "Intermedio"
chapters of the Atlas text.
By the end of this unit (November 10), I want you to hand in
a one-page report that outlines your project.
If you choose option #1 (analysis paper), I want the following in your
one-page report: (1) the composers, title, and approximate dates of composition
of the two works you will discuss, (2) a translation of the text of the
madrigals, and (3) a short bibliography.
If you choose option #2 (research paper), I want the following in your
one-page report: (1) a one-to-two-paragraph outline of your topic (e.g.,
what questions are you trying to answer in your research paper? What do
you think your answers might be?), (2) a short bibliography, and (3) some
evidence that you have begun to locate the items in your bibliography (e.g.,
inter-library loan requests, photocopies of the first page of a couple
articles, etc.)
Important reminder: In order to graduate, you need at least one analysis
paper and one non-analysis paper in your writing portfolio. This requirement
might help you decide which option to take for this paper.
TEST #2 (40% of unit grade): See the Test #2 Information Page
