TEST NO. 2 INFORMATION

TEST TIME: MONDAY, NOVEMBER 13 AT 10:00AM

FORMAT OF TEST NO. 2--40 Points Total
        (1) Listening Identification (10 points)--Simply give the composer and title. Since we know so little about
dates in the 15th century, I will not ask for dates on this test. There will be five examples chosen from the
        following 10 pieces: [10 minutes]
                1.  Dunstable: Quam pulchra es [2:44] (Anth. 1; CD3, Track 1)
                2.  Du Fay: Resvellies vous et faites chiere lye [5:45] (Anth. 11; CD3, Track 3)
                3.  Du Fay: Adieu m'amour, adieu ma joye [5:31] (Anth. 12; CD3, Track 4)
                4.  Du Fay: Missa Se la face ay pale: Gloria [9:05] (Anth. 18b; CD3, Tracks 8)
                5.  Du Fay: Nuper rosarum flores [5:46] (Anth. 14; CD3, Track 6)
                6.  Busnoys: Missa L'homme armé: Agnus Dei [5:25] (Anth. 21; CD3, Track 11)
                7.  Ockeghem: Missa Prolationum: Kyrie [4:52] (Anth. 24; CD3,Track 12)
                8.  Josquin: Ave Maria [4:38] (Anth. 37; CD4, Track 5)
                9.  Josquin: Missa Pange lingua: Kyrie [2:54] (Anth. 42; CD4, Track 9)
                10. Obrecht: Missa Fortuna desperata: Credo [5:21] (Anth. 41; LP 145/Tape 2, Side B)
        (2) Mystery Examples (6 points)--There will be two mystery examples. Each is written by Dufay,
Ockehgem or Josquin. Your job is to tell me which of the three was the likely composer of the excerpt, and
        why. [5 minutes]
        (3) One-Paragraph Answer Section (12 points)--There will be two questions on two of the following
topics: the "English Sound," humanism, the 15th-century motet, and 15th-century notation. [15 minutes]
        (4) Short Essay (12 points)--The topic will be the fifteenth-century mass. Due to the overwhelming
influence of study groups on my Music 301 test, I have decided that I cannot announce the exact question
prior to the test. The essay question will ask you (1) to discuss broad historical trends (e.g., the evolution of
the cantus firmus mass) and (2) to talk about a few of the masses you examined during this unit. The
question will be something like: "How did Dufay use the cantus firmus in Missa Se la face ay pale, and how
might a later Cantus Firmus mass by Busnoys or Ockeghem differ in its treatment of a cantus firmus? Given
        specific examples." [15 mintes]
