Honors Committee minutes – 01/14/08

  1. Online Applications
    1. Professor Hamrick discussed how to access online applications
    2. Shastri noted the emphasis of writing mechanics; discussed the need for a checklist
    3. Hamrick said he would put a link to a reviewing rubric on the website
  2. Student Demographics
    1. Tarver presented the demographic report
    2. Outlined the nature of the Honors applications, both external and internal
    3. Hamrick said he will email talking points when speaking to prospective students
  3. Projected Courses
    1. Hamrick discussed running only 2 Honors seminars
  4. Current Courses
    1. Imbarrato talked about the Honors English writing course
      1. Discussed types of papers written in class
      2. Skills emphasized in class:
        1. How to organize thoughts
        2. How to go to reading a text, produce argument
    2. Colson discussed “Space, Time, and Change”
      1. Big science discoveries that relate to time and space and that everything is changing
      2. How scientists explore things based on those revelations
    3. Gorsline discussed the focus of her speech course
      1. Focusing on:
        1. Individual assessments where they video themselves
        2. Impromptu, limited speaking than others
        3. Working on presenting research
        4. Analyze political communication
  5. Reviewed the proposed change to the Program: Honors Learning Contract
    1. Shastri asked about the evaluation—proposal will be judged,
    2. Colson addressed concerns about faculty willingness or ability for professors who can’t or don’t want to
    3. Czynzki noted about 300 or 400 conflict if freshmen want to take it as well
    4. Sherryse and Tarver discussed the need for the Honors Learning Contract
    5. Tarver noted the issue about not allowing students to use HLC for courses in their major
    6. Colson suggested making a friendly amendment, allowing students to use courses in their major for HLC
    7. Proposal passed unanimously with friendly amendment.
  6. Reviewed the requirement of the Honors Lecture Series
    1. Sherryse and Tarver noted the dissent received from upper-level students about the requirement
  7. Honors Focus Forum
    1. Hamrick discussed the need for professors to look into working the Forum into their classes
    2. Discussed request for more money
    3. Czynski discussed how other departments may contribute to the Forum
