Dental Dams

Dental dams are square pieces of thin latex, like the latex in condoms that are used to prevent the transmission of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) when oral sex is performed on the vagina or anal opening.  The dental dam is placed across the vagina or anal opening to prevent exchange of bodily fluids. Dental dams are not lubricated, but using a water-based lubricant on the vagina/anal side of the dental dam may help keep the dam in place, and to increase sensation. Plain or flavored dental dams are available or a flavored water-based lubricant may be used to enhance the taste during oral sex.  If you do not have a "dental dam", it is also possible to use plastic wrap, or a cut-open condom to cover the vulva or anus. Dental dams should not be used in place of a condom for anal or vaginal intercourse.

Lubrications

Personal lubricants (i.e. Astroglide, Wet, K-Y jelly) are specialized lubricants that reduce friction in the vagina, anus or other body parts during sexual activity. Some lubricants are scented and/or flavored. Only water based lubricants should be used for sexual activity as oil-based lubricants such as Vaseline, baby oil etc. may weaken latex and reduce the effectiveness of the condom.

Finger Cots

A finger cot resembles a male condom but is used to cover the fingers. They may be used during sexual contact, but surgical gloves are probably more common. Because of their similarity to condoms they are sometimes called finger condoms.

Sex Toys

It is important to understand that unclean sex toys can transmit STI's  and toys and other aids will last a lot longer if they are maintained properly.  Here are some tips about their care and maintenance: Antibacterial soap and warm water is a must for cleaning toys. Any toy that has come in contact with body fluids should be washed in soap and water and then soaked in a solution of one part household bleach to nine parts water. Rinse well in clear water after to remove any of the cleaning residue. It is important to follow the manufactures safety instructions.
