What is it?
Emergency Contraception (EC) can be taken after sex in order to prevent pregnancy.  It is most commonly used after having unprotected sex.  Plan B is the only brand specifically approved for the purposes of EC. Plan B contains a highly concentrated dose of the hormone progesterone.


How do I use it?

  • Plan B can be bought over the counter by those 17 years of age or older. Those under 17 must currently get a prescription to get Plan B.
  • Plan B contains 2 pills that are either taken together or 12 hours apart from each other. It may be more effective if taken together.
  • It can be taken up to 5 days after having sex, but is most effective within 72 hours.
  • EC is meant as “back up” birth control only. It is not as effective as consistent use of other birth control methods.
  • Other birth control pills may be taken in increased doses if Plan B is unattainable

  • Copper IUD’s may also be used as EC, but will require a visit to a health care provider.


How effective is it?
When taken within 72 hours after sex, Plan B is 75%-89% effective at preventing pregnancy.  The sooner you take EC after sex, the better your chances it will work.


What are the advantages?

  • Can be used after sex
  • Can get pills ahead of time
  • Easy to use
  • Does not affect future fertility
  • Does not affect current pregnancy


What are the disadvantages?

  • Does not protect against STI’s and HIV/AIDS
  • Has a time limit on effectiveness
  • Possible side effects, which most commonly include nausea
  • Not available over the counter to those 17 years of age and younger
  • Not as effective as the primary forms of birth control
