MSUM requires all undergraduates to have health insurance

The Student Senate at MSUM adopted a policy that allows domestic students to have access to a very affordable insurance plan if you don’t have access to other coverage or wish to supplement your existing coverage (perhaps because your existing plan is an HMO from out of the area or if your plan has a high deductible). The plan selected by the University is affordable and includes many benefits. The plan is available at www.uhcsr.com, find MSUM and choose the domestic plan for the school year. You can print out the entire policy from this link; student can also pick up a hard copy of the policy at Hendrix Clinic & Counseling Center.

This plan is available to undergraduate students that are enrolled for a minimum 6 on-campus credits each semester. Insurance is purchased twice a year; fall and spring/summer when students register for their classes. Insurance for spring/summer are combined and you cannot purchase them separately. Students do not have to take summer classes to be covered by the insurance plan during the summer.

When students register for fall and spring classes they should see a screen asking them about health insurance. They can choose to “opt in” for the MSUM health insurance plan or “opt out” if they are covered by a different plan. They will have to enter the name of the insurance company they are covered under.

If you selected MSUM student health insurance plan your costs for the 2012-13 Academic year are:

• Fall (effective 8/27/12 through 1/13/13) - Cost $494.00
• Spring/Summer (effective 1/14/13 through 8/26/13) - Cost $797.00

Please note that insurance charges may change each academic school year.

Adding Insurance
You can purchase the MSUM student health insurance by emailing Betty Kucera at kucera@mnstate.edu. Please put “health insurance” on the subject line, include your name, student ID number and that you would like to add the insurance charge to your bill.

Removing Insurance Charge
If insurance was added to your bill by error and/or you obtain health insurance by a different policy you can have the charged removed by emailing Betty Kucera at kucera@mnstate.edu. Please put “health insurance” on the subject line, include your name, student ID number and the name of the insurance company you are covered under. If you have used any portion of the insurance plan in the interim you will not be able to remove the charge.

All international students and their accompanying dependents are required to carry Health Insurance through the MnSCU designated carrier, United Health Care.

Tips for accessing and using health insurance:
Health insurance can be a complicated and confusing subject. Many health insurance plans are available with all sorts of varying coverage, exclusions, deductibles, co-pays, and so on. The following are generally accepted tips for accessing and utilizing any health insurance plan.

• Carry your insurance plan card(s) with you. you may have more than one card for your medical plan, prescription plan, dental plan, and so forth.
• Carry some form of photo identification with you.
• Review your helath insurance benefits before you need them. By doing so, you will know what to expect at the time of need.
• Know your co-pay amount.
• Check with you health insurance company to determine if Hendrix Clinic & Counseling Center is "In-Network" or "Out-of-Network" for reimbursement purposes.
