Hendrix Health Center Peer Educator Interns

What is Peer Education?

The primary objective of peer education is to assist in the development and implementation of campus-wide health promotion campaigns designed to prevent health problems among college students by encouraging healthy lifestyles.

Who Are We?

As an extension of Hendrix Health Center and MSUM, health promotion peer educator interns develop and implement activities designed to encourage positive lifestyles. Hendrix Health Promotion Peer Educator Interns all attend MSUM, represent a variety of majors and are certified by The BACCHUS & GAMMA Peer Education Network. The goals of peer education are to:

  1. Give studentsa practical work experience in developing and implementing a health promotion effort.
  2. Give students training and experience inorganizational management and leadership.
  3. Develop a student-driven effort to create a healthier campus

Peer Educators facilitate presentations in the residence halls and classrooms. These presentations are designed to encourage healthy lifestyles for the campus community. Below is a partial listing of programs interns promote and present.

So You Want A Tattoo.

Presentation that addresses questions of choosing a studio and an artist, safety measures and what to do if you don't like your tattoo.

 Getting What You Want From Body Piercing

Addresses types of piercing, choosing a studio an artist, safety measures and the proper metals for piercing.

 Sex-Tac-Toe

Fun and interactive game designed to provide information regarding a variety of relationship issues.

Condom Bingo

Interactive game answers questions related to sex. When you yell BINGO, you'll receive a FREE CONDOM!

Human Monopoly

Life-size game board activity addressing knowledge about alcohol use and issues. Prizes Included!

He Said/She Said

A unique format for men and women to respond to questions such as, " I wish women would...", " I wish men would...".

Pillow Talk

Grab your pillow, get into your PJ's and meet in the lounge for an informal chat, question/answer session on any issue residents are interested in.

Stress

Learn how to use time management skills and other techniques to ease and cope with stress in your life.

Relationships

This program addresses issues such as long-distance realtionships, keys to a healthy relationship and warning signs of unhealthy relationships.

Health Jeopardy   

 A new fun interactive jeopardy game that deals with a variety of topics such as : Sex, Alcohol,Condoms,Contraception, Pharming, STI's, HIV/AIDS, and Stress. Demonstrations, hand-outs and prizes will be awarded!  

 Drugs/Alcohol Jeopardy 

A new fun interactive jeopardy game that deals with a variety of topics such as: other drugs, marijuana, date rape drugs, alcohol, GHB, and Ecstasy. Demonstrations, hand-outs and prizes will be awarded!

Virtual Social Networking

A NEW fun, interactive and informative presentation that shows students the ins and outs of virtual social networks such as Facebook and Myspace.

In addition to programming, interns gain practical experience in public relations and advertising through the promotion of Hendrix Health Center's programs, services and annual health fair.
