I would like you to present your interpretation of what Chuck
K. means by "I wanted to rock. To me, rocking was everything." You
should note issues of lifestyle (both real and fantasy), and music that he
brings into play in his book.
How does one "rock" as a 13-year old in a small,
North Dakota town in the 1980s?
In what ways did Chuck achieve his dream, and in what ways
did he not?
Why is listening to music, and particular "rocking"
genres of it, so important to him?
This report should be in essay form, typed, double-spaced,
between 4-6 pages.
2) Due: May 6, 2003
Based on Fargo Rock City (a more careful reading)
I would like you to present Chuck K.'s timeline and assessment
of quality/relevance of the "heavy metal" genre. His view is subjective,
and you may want to take issue with his judgments. Keep notes as you read
of the groups and songs that he mentions along with his evaluation. This information
is often buried in asides and so forth, so you have to be careful in your
reading.
This report should be in essay form, typed, double-spaced,
between 6-10 pages. You may want to use charts and lists as supporting material.
You can list them as Appendices and make reference to them in the body of
your text.
there will be the possibility of doing
additional reports (on local concerts, performances, un-assigned but relevant
recordings) for a maximum of 5% extra credit.
Writing standards:
This is an upper-level class for music majors with a writing
component. You will be held to standards appropriate to your standing. For
any written assignments submitted for this class (apart from in-class work),
you will be expected to type your work using double-spacing. You will proofread
your work before handing it in. Note that running a spell-check program is
not sufficient; you should read through what you have written carefully and
make any necessary corrections. For each submission, you will be allowed two
errors of spelling, grammar, punctuation, or syntax. After that, you will
lose 10% of the assignment's grade for each subsequent error. Hand-written
work will not be accepted unless discussed with the instructor in advance.
