Find two recent (from past 25 years or so) recordings that
make reference to early popular music (up to 1950).
The tracks you choose should not be imitations of an earlier
style, but should "engage" with it in some way that is more creative.
In your written report to accompany the tracks you select,
you should list:
the artist/group
the album
year of production
reference
You should then describe the style/repertoire being referenced,
and the ways in which the earlier music is incorporated into the contemporary
work.
Your report should be approximately 1-2 pages for each entry,
typed, double-spaced. Proofread before handing it in.
If you have trouble duplicating your tracks in order to hand
them in, or are worried about handing in the original recording, please let
me know in advance so we can work out alternative arrangements.
2) Due: April 15, 2003
Choose a track from the 1960s. Then, find one track from
the 1970s that was influenced by the '60s track. Then, find one track from
the 1980s that was influenced by the '70s track.
Your written report (2-3 pages, typed, double-spaced) should
include:
track information (artist/group, album, year of production)
a discussion of the particular style exemplified, and,
for the second two tracks, a discussion of the particular influences from
the earlier track.
You may find that there are particular musical influences
(structure, texture, "groove", etc.), or lyrics, or studio production
techniques or "sounds", that have exerted the influence, or a combination.
If possible, please hand in a CD or cassette with your chosen
tracks on it.
