T.J. Hansen was raised on a family farm in eastern South Dakota. She completed a B.S. degree in Mathematics and a M.S. degree in Economics at South Dakota State University.  In Spring 2000, she served as a fixed-term instructor of Economics at MSUM.  Following this appointment, she returned to work as an Economics Research Assistant at South Dakota State University focusing on agricultural land taxation and value added agriculture issues from 2000 to 2005.  Before joining the MSUM Economics Department faculty, she was a Ph.D. student at the University of Minnesota where she specialized in the fields of Health Economics and Statistics.  Her dissertation research considers the use of business tax incentives in economic development policy.  In July 2008, Hansen placed first in the American Agricultural Economics Association (AAEA) Graduate Student Extension Competition in Orlando, Florida where she delivered an extension presentation pertaining to her ongoing dissertation research.
