11) Other comments:

10) Good; although the Cambridge Companion got a little dry and some parts were tough to agree with.

11) I think this class was excellent. Honestly, most courses at MSUM are very easy, & I like that, but it’s nice to get a challenge sometimes.

10) The texts were sufficient.

11) N/A

10) Insightful & well applied.

11) N/A

10) I enjoyed all texts. Amount of reading became a bit much at times, but I appreciated having an instructor as involved as Hamrick is in bringing a wide variety of critics forth so students have a range of opinions to form their own from.

11) N/A

10) Liked Donne poetry & Jonson plays – difficult, but interesting.

11) I felt that this class was taken to a higher level than necessary. The instructor treated students in a way that seemed like a graduate class. The instructor was therefore difficult to please and I felt that he was unsatisfied with the class overall result. I felt I never gave a correct answer without being belittled and picked on. It’s hard to please an instructor who feels he knows everything. I felt singled out, repeatedly belittled and completely & obviously disliked by the instructor. An upper level class should help you advance & expand your learning rather than make you feel stupid. The professor expressed obvious disgust when a student had to leave when the class was over. The professor repeatedly kept the students longer than the scheduled time. As a student I am very busy a lot of the time and have other commitments immediately following the scheduled class, as do others I’m sure. It should come as no surprise to professor Hamrick that we need to leave when class is over. Example: Today is May 10th 2004, our final time is 3-5 pm he is holding a class lecture instead and since we have to fill out this evaluation he is forcing us to remain in class until 5:15 which to me is pushing it a lot and completely stupid.

1.      Course Organization: Your opinion of the texts? Sufficient time devoted to each text? Reading assignments of “reasonable length”? Relationship between texts and the instructor’s presentation? Relationship between the texts and examinations? Relationship between texts and assigned papers? Did the lectures contribute to your understanding of the course material?

2.      2. Written Assignments and Tests: Were tests and papers “reasonable” in terms of length, grading policies, instructor’s comments, being returned on time?

3.      Instruction: In terms of the teaching methods used (lecture, discussion, audio-visual aids, etc.), what do you consider to be the “best” feature of the course? The “worst” feature? In what specific ways might the instruction of this course be improved?

4.      Individual Instructor: Instructor’s attitude toward students? Instructor’s availability and helpfulness outside of class? Did the instructor motivate you to do your best (or progressively better) work?

5.      Other comments:

1. I enjoyed the discussions a lot, and the only thing to say is there’s never enough class time to fully discuss Donne or Jonson.

2. I thought they were, but the reading/writing is a lot more than what one gets in other courses here.

3. Well, it was small group discussions, with a close look at both the primary texts and critical materials and that was the only approach, which was good.

4. Dr. Hamrick did a good job; If a student gripes about the amount of effort required it says more about the student than it does about Dr. Hamrick.

5. N/A

1. The lectures were always excellent, I would have to try not to learn in order to do so. The texts weren’t unreasonable – I have no complaints with time. I felt that at times more time could have been spent on the text, some of the poetry in particular (large amount covered, few explicated)

2. I did more writing for this class than in any other, but I feel that Prof. Hamrick’s comments were very useful as far as learning how to constract better literary analysis papers – putting that advice into practice was the sticking point.

3. I liked the method of instruction overall, especially when directed by the instructor versus the few times class was student led.

4. Prof. Hamrick has always been understand, accommodating, and constantly motivates students.

5. N/A

1. Texts were suitable to lectures. Hard to determine on the sufficient time devoted to texts due to their volume, sometimes reasonable, occasionally lengthy; good correlation between text & presentations, and papers. Lectures contributed greatly.

2. More or less – grading “Tough but fair”

3. Diagnosis & application of critical writing techniques. Worst feature: Time of class conflicting w/ other ? Perhaps improve class by providing more historical contexts.

4. Attitude=excellent. Helpfulness=Good. Do your best= Yes.

5. I wish he wouldn’t swear so damn much.

1. I enjoyed the lectures – which I took more as discussion. I always walked away from class wanting more discussion time and still mentally debating what we were talking about. I like how you brought in outside sources into discussion. It has helpful.

2. Papers were reasonable. Only thing is 8 sources for midterm was way too much, but I think you realized that & switched it to four sources for the final – which was more reasonable.

3. I liked that lecture was more of a discussion. Professor was open to our ideas as long as we supported them. It was a very relaxed atmosphere & I think contributed greatly to discussion.

4. Yes-the instructor was extremely helpful and openly critiques papers to aid students in becoming a better writer. I liked having the re-write for the mid-term paper – it helped me see how my ideas could still progress, and pushed me to analyze them more completely.

5. N/A

1. Length- yes, texts-ok, time-no, lectures contribute to understanding-I guess.

2. Reasonable – difficult but not horrible, length-adequate, grading policies-so, so, instructor’s comments-helpful, returned on time-no.

3. Best-The authors studied. Worst-Treatment by professor was horrible & very arrogant.

4. Attitude toward students-negative. Helpful outside of class-good. Do your best- If belittlement & telling you you’re wrong helps you get better…..

5. This class was very difficult – too difficult and the instructor is very arrogant.
