A. What did you like Most about the course?

B. What did you like Least about the course?

C. Would you recommend this instructor to your friends?

D. Any additional comments regarding the course or instructor?

A. I really enjoyed the teaching method of Prof. Hamrick. I feel that allowing students to engage in discussion about subjects rather than continually force-feeding lectures (especially when it comes to literature) allows for better comprehension and skill improvement.

B. I think I could have preferred three 70 minute classes to two 100 minute classes each week-allows more time to develop an understanding as I read.

C. Definitely. Professor Hamrick is a remarkably learned and intelligent man. He makes class interesting by inviting discussion and deluge deeper into material than I am used to.

D. Excellent course, I am excited for Major British Writers II. Excellent Professor – I hope to have him again some time.

A. It really taught me a lot about English and explication. The works that we read were interesting.

B. It was quite difficult in the beginning, because I wasn’t sure what to do. It got better, though.

C. Yes, if they are willing to work very hard for their grade.

D. Very difficult but, become easier as semester progressed.

A. The class discussions about the reading.

B. It was really fast paced, there was so much to do with so little time to do it in.

C. Yes, he was very helpful when I didn’t understand.

D. N/A

A. The historical lectures as well as the in class discussions – the instructor was very helpful.

B. N/A

C. Yes.

D. No.

A. Reading classic literature.

B. Being expected to take online quizzes (only available for about 12 hours) it would be better to have in class quizzes instead.

C. Yes. He was difficult, but I learned a lot.

D. He asks a lot of his students, but it is reasonable.

A. The poems we read.

B. Being forced to participate and trying to answer questions that I didn’t understand.

C. no!

D. The instructor is incredibly intimidating, so much so that I was unable to concentrate on the subject matter because I had so much anxiety about just going to/being in class.

A. How it educated me & expanded my education ideas as a writer, student, and teacher.

B. Timed (Very rushed) Quizes, length between Due Dates of Papers.

C. If you want to be challenged, Yes! Some people droped this class because of difficulty. I will have learned more from this entire experience.

D. Tough stuff! Rewarding when finished.

A. The reading & discussion.

B. The tests.

C. Yes, but only if they’re willing to work.

D. Even though he tries to get us to come up with our own ideas, he still tends to ask very leading questions that guide the discussion right where he wants it. Also, the explication that he wants on our papers is very formulaic.

A. Learning literary terms, what they are and how they function.

B. having the bulk of papers and tests at the end.

C. Yes.

D. Prof. Hamrick makes himself available to all students and provides help – he does this to a degree I have not encountered with other professors.

A. I enjoyed the most when we focused on women’s writing. It was excellent that you focused on feminist theory –I loved it!

B. Some material seemed repetitive, but it was probably b/c I didn’t particularly care for that piece of work.

C. Yes I would, but I would definitely let them know he has high expectations. It maybe difficult, but you learn so much.

D. This class has been very interesting. Each meeting provided a plethora of knowledge—it is so much more intense than any other class I’ve taken. This gives much more work, but provides the learning that we are paying for.

A. I most liked reading poetry.

B. Beowulf.

C. Yes.

D. The instructor is very demanding but I learned a lot and was pushed to do my best work.

A. I liked how involved everyone was in class discussion.

B. At the same time, student involvement was too much where it would get to the point where some students didn’t really understand a concept.

C. Yes, if they enjoy reading & analyzing literature at a high level for a 200 –level class.

D. I think it would be a good idea to spend a little more time on literary tropes/terms.

A. It helped me write stronger, more detailed papers.

B. The lectures that were given to help with the material were often useless. I think that the information given was too broad, and rarely helped me understand the reading.

C. No-I thought that grading policies were unfair and that this 200 level class was taught more like a 400 level class. It was the worst course I have ever taken. It seems like no matter how much I improved, my grades remained low.

D. I learned a lot more in the two days that Gary Litt taught. He provided helpful information and didn’t talk down to the students. Steven Hamrick needs to come down off his cloud

A. Expansion of my knowledge of early literature.

B. Emphasis on explication, length of assignments, grading criteria.

C. No. Not unless they actually desire a class in which they feel pressured and inadequate.

D. Much harder than it should have been for a 200-level course. The instructor treated it like a 400-level, which was not fair. I didn’t like how he seemed to know everything and made us feel like we knew nothing.

A. Learning about classic Literature and that there was given enough time to read the material.

B. To early in the morning and not always having enough coffee.

C. Yes, he is very easy to work with.

D. Very interesting course.

A. I enjoyed reading Aphra Behn’s pieces. I read the first half of Oroonoko & really enjoy what I read. It shouldn’t just be tossed aside because we didn’t have enough time for others. She was highly influential during her time & I enjoyed reading her novel & poetry.

B. The papers were too difficult to write. I know this is a 4 cr. class & 4 papers are a standard number but the length & perfection that is expected for them is too much. I’ve had 300 & 400 level classes that require less intensity in the papers and are more enjoyable to write. This was a difficult chore.

C. No.

D. Class discussion was too intense. Let the class have more input in where discussion is going. People would be more willing to participate & students are more likely to learn more from each other in groups than in a lecture situation.
