Minnesota State University Moorhead Student's Evaluation of Course and Instruction
This evaluation is designed to aid the faculty member in improvement of instruction. It may also be used in university decisions affecting this instructor. Your answers will be kept anonymous and the faculty member will not have access to these forms until after grades for the course have been submitted.

A. Challenge. I read every day and study in order to keep up. Therefore I learn most from the class.
B. Milton-I am not aware of all of the Biblical allusion we talked about in class. I am not a Bible reader, I feel slightly left behind by this.
C. Oh Yes! for sure. Prof. Hamrick is one of the best in the Eng. Dept. at MSUM. I have had him for a couple classes and have taken so much with me – I am smarter b/c of these classes.
D. Hamrick is intelligent and uses many different pedagogical strategies to enhance difficult literature.
A. the epic stories.
B. The poetry.
C. Yes.
D. Sometimes Hamrick can seem a bit condescending or unwilling to compromise or discuss different ideas / points/. All in all, thought great prof. & fun course.
A. discussions and the environment created by the professor to respect students opinions.
B. Quizzes and papers. It was too much to do in one semester. Plus with the reading due each day and online comments, quizzes and papers are overwhelming.
C. Yes!
D. It would be helpful to not give quizzes. Those who read will get better grades on the tests because they have read.
A. The discussion of the texts.
B. The participation points. I liked being encouraged to participate but when points were involved it stressed me out and the quizzes.
C. Yes. He’s very good and knowledgeable about the subject matter.
D. We should be able to see which questions we got wrong on the quizzes. It would be helpful and increase our understanding.
A. The texts that were chosen and the way the instructor takes time to help you with your papers.
B. the length of the papers.
C. Without a doubt.
D. Best teacher in the English Dept. Wonderful teaching style.
A. Dr. Hamrick’s extensive knowledge of everything we covered.
B. The online discussion group. I didn’t feel like it should be required, but if it wasn’t how many people would do it?
C. Yes.
D. No. Dr. Hamrick is funny, but he is also serious and he was great respect for all of his students. He’s also intimidating.
A. Prof. Hamrick’s extensive knowledge and respect for students, his understanding of the material.
B. the amount required. I couldn’t keep up, and the tests were kind of hard, the way the were designed.
C. Yes.
D. Very good teacher, just the amount of information we’re flooded with and how much we have to grasp was a little overwhelming.
A. It was a real challenge but many of the pieces read were very entertaining. Class discussion also helped to keep people on their toes.
B. The online quizzes. I felt like we had enough things to do without having to remember little quizzes about what we just read.
C. Definitely.
D. It was nice having an instructor who was very enthusiastic about difficult topics.
A. Great context!!!
B. It went way too fast.
C. Yes.
D. 1. Perhaps allow time at the beginning of class to go over the content. When that happens, it ensures everyone is on the same page. 2. Leave time for questions, besides just the course work – it seemed too structured…if it’s a natural discussion due to additional questions, it’d be great to hear them. 3. Keep in mind the leaning styles for participation.

A. The vast array of theoretical concepts through which texts were addressed.
B. The time of day.
C. Yes.
D. Dr. Hamrick is one of the only instructors to encompass many kinds of literary theory and use them to penetrate the literature. He’s a little tough and requires a lot, but I believe a lot can be learned too. I wish more instructors use his method of teaching. I also wish he kept set office hours.
A. Hamrick is very knowledgeable about literature, historical context, and theology, which helps with understanding the works assigned.
B. A lot of class discussion was focused on Christianity and religion, and there was not enough focus on the actual literature – at times it felt as if metaphor and “the message” was covered too much and the actual story was ignored.
C. I would recommend his for upper level English courses, but not for a 200-level class.
D. Discussions could perhaps have a more relaxed feel – it was often a tense atmosphere and students felt stifled.
A. The fact that there are many resources, syllabus, class discussions online on the D2L. I love having that electronic anytime access.
B. I wish we had more time. There is so much subject matter to cover and discussion to go with it, that it seems abrupt at times.
C. Yes.
D. Nope.
A. I liked how enthusiastic Hamrick was about the material. That caused me to have a greater appreciation for the things we read.
B. I felt like a lot of the subject matter went way over my head and caused a lot of frustration about the course.
C. Yes.

A. It pushed me to learn critical and literary terms in order to further my analysis of the text. I enjoyed the in-class and online discussions. I really enjoyed the amount of knowledge Dr. Hamrick brought to the class everyday.
B. Sometimes it was hard to get a hold of the instructor, which is understandable since I’m sure he is very busy.
C. Yes.
D. Would take another curse from Dr. Hamrick. I also feel like his course really taught me a lot – very worthwhile & valuable. Thanks.
A. I enjoyed the in-depth talks concerning how to read old English literature and understand it on multiple levels.
B. I’m not much of a talker, and I don’t think people who are uncomfortable talking in class should have participation points deducted. Also, I didn’t think it was fair to have a paper due on a test day.
C. Only if they were English majors (but yes).
D. thanks, I learned a lot.
A. I liked using the Bedford and learning about different schools of criticism and appropriate vocabulary. Loved how the pieces built on each other historically and how Hamrick taught us to see those connections.
B. I am torn about writing exposition. I see some value in it but also feel it’s a bit tedious. I did not like the class length. An hour + 40 minutes is too long for such dense material.
C. Absolutely, Dr. Hamrick is knowledgeable articulate, maintains a respectful and intellectual classroom setting and is available and thoughtful outside of class.
D. This class and Hamrick’s instructing have given me many new things to think about and useful analytical tools.
