Copyprep -- Gunaratne/Hohenberg/Mencher

The Advocate (Feb. 7)

(403 words)

Type your name in the upper left hand corner of the first sheet of all assignments. In the second line, type a one-word slug

that best identifies your story, followed by a dash and the surnames of the news sources (each separated by a backslash)

you interviewed for the story. In the third line, type the date you submitted the story. In the fourth line, type the target

publication for your story and indicate (in brackets) the publication's issue date, when the story would appear. (Compare

whether the date of submission and the date of publication make sense in relation to the publication's deadline requirements.)

In the fifth line, give the word count of your story (in brackets).

Leave seven blank spaces before starting the text of the story. No indentation of paragraphs is necessary. Double space lines

and triple space grafs. (After you transfer the wordprocessed copy onto the e-mail message area, re-adjust the text prior to

electronic transmission by deleting double spacing of lines and adjusting graf separation to a single blank space using the Pico

editor.)

If the story consists of more than one page, write the word More at the bottom of the page. Circle that word with a pen or a

pencil to indicate it's not part of the text. On the next page, type your name, "2" (for page number) and slug at top left of the

page. Thus: Gunaratne-2-Copyprep. (After printing your hard copy, delete these editorial extras irrelevant to electronic

copy.)

Sentences and paragraphs end on a page. There are no runovers. Use "Page Preview" command in the "File" menu or its

equivalent in the wordprocessor to adjust pages as necessary. If the copy ends on a page, use an end mark: 30, # or END.

(Again, make the necessary adjustments after you transfer the text for electronic transmission.

Re-read and copy edit, preferably on the wordprocessor, before printing the story. Always use the "Spelling..." command

in the "Document" menu or its equivalent to check the accuracy of spelling. Follow the AP stylebook. (After you transfer

the text for electronic transmission, re-read the copy for necessary editing to adjust paragraphs, quote marks, apostrophes,

etc., that the transfer may have caused to goof up.)

Always use non-glossy paper for printing. Use 12-point Times font to print your copy. Keep copy clean.
